Randy Twizzle Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 A very tragic fatal car crash.. Quote

That's just plain bad taste He's not laughing about it. He's got a case of the giggles. It happens to the best of us, and it often happens at the worst possible times. The worst thing about a case of the giggles is that the more you try to stop, the harder you want to laugh. I'm sure he got in trouble, but he doesn't deserve to be canned over it. Quote

There's a guy in New York who read the news 'teasers' with an inappropriate smile on his face - Ernie Anastos. I'll never forget his smarmy smile as he'd say "Five dead, Harlem fire - film at 11." But laughing like he did - if its not grounds for dismissal, its certainly grounds for a suspension, and being demoted to weekend fill-in anchor. Quote

Happened to me at my grandfather's funeral. Believe me, I didn't consider it funny. Quote

The worst thing about a case of the giggles is that the more you try to stop, the harder you want to laugh. I'm sure he got in trouble, but he doesn't deserve to be canned over it. In junior high biology class a film was being shown and for some reason there was footage of white furry baby seals getting clubbed to death. I can't recall if it was some sort of defensive mechanism on my part regarding the footage, some joking going on with another classmate, or a combination of the 2, but I got a case of the giggles that I could not suppress. Quite a few girls in the class thought I was a dangerous psycho after that, though blurting out "sorry" in-between the giggles kept it from being all of them. Same thing happened to a lesser extent and I was able to do a better job of suppressing it, though it was more difficult for a cousin of mine during my granny's funeral. This was mainly because the doofus minister presiding over the service was wearing a ugly powder blue suit right and mentioned how the dearly departed had been away from the flock for 35 years. With the likes of him in charge it was easy to see why! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 This reminds me of the classic Mary Tyler Moore show when Chuckles the Clown died. Quote
Quincy Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 However, if the anchor is one of those people who isn't able to fully control this kind of thing, don't you think that newcasting might not be his ideal job? I mean, on a daily basis it's his job to speak calmly & professionally about some of the worst things that happen to humankind. If he can't do it, hey maybe he shouldn't be in front of the camera...... I've seen this happen to local anchors who have worked for 10 to 25 years, hell, even one for 40, and also Bob Schieffer seemed to get the giggles every so often when he was on CBS. You apologize and move on. If the offended parties can't forgive then have a nice life holding a grudge. Now if it happens to this guy once a week during the more tragic stories, then sure, he isn't cut out for it. The more you're on the air the more likely this sort of thing can happen, and if people are so uptight that they can't handle it, then stick to bloody newpapers. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 I was once in the middle of a very serious meeting at work. All of the big hitters from the research group were brought in to try and solve a tricky problem we were having with a product. I presented a paper and it launched an in-depth discussion of what we needed to do from there. As I sat there, my boss slid a paper over to me. Thinking it was something he wanted me to bring up, I read it. It said, "Barry's breath could kill flies". I broke out in hysterics and everyone in the room thought I needed to be sedated. I can't tell you how embarrassed I felt at that meeting. But, I'm still laughing as I type this. It still cracks me up just thinking about it. I can only imagine a similar thing happened here. After all, we can't see his face so we have no idea what he was looking at while that tragic scene was show to viewers. Quote

AndrewHill Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 Maybe it was an overreaction, but if someone can't deliver the news with some decency, especially if it involves a fatality, then that person has no business being a newscaster. Just my opinion. Quote
MoGrubb Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 A very tragic fatal car crash.. It sounds like somebody was fucking with him, trying to make him lose his cool, which he did. He ought to kick that somebody's ass. re: MT Moore/Chuckles That had to be one of the funniest scenes ever on tv. It was hallarious. Quote
robviti Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 (edited) if you listen closely, you can hear someone else's giggling just before this poor guy started to laugh. imo, something happened in the studio that elicited the laughter, and the anchor's reaction was totally unrelated to the tragic news report. although it's not uncommon for someone to laugh nervously under particularly stressful conditions, i don't think that was the case in this situation. My boss passed me a piece of paper that gave me the giggles, during a debate in Parliament! And it was being televised! And one of the the cameraman, we were told by colleagues later, focused on the two of us giggling and sniggering behind our hands. Nothing happened to us; it didn't even damage our prospects. We were both promoted some time later. MG Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 Another occasion. When the old King died (George VI, in February 1952) we found out about it at school. The headmaster got us all into the hall and, when we were quiet, said, in a portentous voice, "the King is dead". And I burst out laughing. I was eight - not yet an anarchist. MG Quote
