catesta Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 "This is not a reunion," said Roth, 51. "This is a whole new band." "It is totally blowing our minds and I think it will yours, too," said Eddie Van Halen, 52. "It's better than it's ever been." It's a shame Eddie's fat kid is taking Anthony's place. Sorry, didn't mean to go off topic, but... Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 20, 2007 Author Report Posted August 20, 2007 Allen Lowe is a man of many talents--and identities! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 A board member--whom I shall cunningly disguise here as "he who walks in Brooklyn"--has a heavy hand in the proceedings Clementine? And his anthologizing is excellent! This is a great read so far, and having just done a breeze through of NY (first in several years), it really resonated. Unfortunately I wasn't able to meet up with any of our board members while there, but at least got to see the circus that the Bowery has become, even since 2003 when I was last there... Yeah, all those new buildings. Did you stop at DMG? DMG was solid - the CD selection is pretty astounding, at least for free music and avant-garde stuff. Apparently they are going to move and become an "appointment only" joint. Quote
7/4 Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 I know they might move, didn't know about the appointment only deal. They still have to have someone there to do web sales (aka mail orders). Quote
AllenLowe Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 well, I was thinking of the guy who knocked on people's doors and told them he was giving them a million dollars from an un-named benefactor - Quote
JSngry Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 The postal service works in mysterious ways, that's all I can say... Clem, PM me buddy, if you will and/or if you want. I need some info, seafood plate... Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 20, 2007 Author Report Posted August 20, 2007 Can't wait to read it... radio/writing assignments piled up till Labor Day Weekend, but NYCalling should be here by then & I'll spend the holiday reading it. Might sound weird, but the title kept dialing up Ornette for me... probably because of the two Blue Note CDs (NEW YORK IS NOW and LOVE CALL). I got the Clash reference but forgot about the Jackie. Guest donald petersen Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 hey clement wu is that your brooklyn website? i think i won a prize by knowing where those buildings in the photograph are. i might be wrong but i think it's smith and 9 by the F stop. Quote
Tom Storer Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 so are we still pretending that we don't know who edc is? i don't want to ruin it for anyone. I had no idea edc "was" anyone, but just reading the thread as it now stands gave me enough ammunition to google his "real identity"--which means no more to me than "edc" or "clementine." Except now I can get the book and have the delicious feeling that while the general book-buying public thinks he's ***** ******, I know that he's really clementine. Quote
AllenLowe Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 I am a camera. Call me Ishmael. To whom it may concern. It takes one to know one. I am you and you are she and...well, whatever - Quote
AllenLowe Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 actually, I'm Jim Alfredson - and he's me; just don't tell our wives - Nessa is actually Bruce Lundevall; Kart is Leslie Gourse; Chewy is just another psycho off the street; and Sangrey is one of the formerly unknown Marsalis brothers (real name: Zeppo Marsalis) - Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Financial Times review Q for the Honourable M. Goldberg & others... edc wonders (in slow motion) what's the view of FT is from "over there." a "big deal," middling or just... eh? gracias for any info. The FT is pretty right wing in its political positioning, as you might imagine, though in its news it strives, I think successfully, to be a "paper of record" as we call them over here. On the arts front, it's catering generally for the ruling classes, so there's a focus on "Art", which is, of course, politically oriented to the right. I haven't read it since I retired. And I never read the arts pages. My mate at work, a top economist around hereabouts, used to reckon the arts pages, but he sang in a classical music choir, so I tend to feel that that confirms my view. I would expect good, fair, reviews of material that has "Artistic" aims, or which can be interpreted thus. I would expect the FT to ignore other stuff. Good review, though. MG Quote

medjuck Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 I (fittingly) bought this while I was in NY last month. The introduction is by Berman but the intros to each section are unsigned. Are they by Berger? Quote
ghost of miles Posted September 23, 2007 Author Report Posted September 23, 2007 New York Calling bash this Wednesday 9/26 in NYC... I'd swing by, but the WFIU corporate jet is in the shop for repairs. Sounds like a good time. Quote
