rostasi Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 A rather bizarre collection of tributes here. It begins with a 21 year old college student who's become obsessed with her... Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 I meant to post her obit that the Times ran about a week ago. I had no idea she lived in Westport, CT, right next door to my hometown, or that she was married to Jack Klugman and while they separated they never got around to filing for divorce. Bret, Charles Nelson Reilly - who also died pretty recently, iirc, and Gene Rayburn made Match Game what it was. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 Remember her??? She is my ROLE MODEL! Time for a drink... Quote
catesta Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 Yeah I read about this a few days ago, it's sad news. I still enjoy watching Match Game on Game Show Network. Quote
Tim McG Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 I remember Brett Somers from the 60s/70s Odd Couple sitcom. She will be missed. RIP. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 The Monday - Friday Matchgame shows were all taped at a single session. They would start drinking at the beginning and be sloshed by the end. So, when the shows were originally aired, they would get progressively intoxicated as the week went on. Those were the days... Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 I loved that show, and my parents hated it. Obviously, it was perfect! Quote

And it seemed to me that Monday on The Gong Show = Friday on The Match Game... Quote
MoGrubb Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 I don't recall ever watching the Match Game. I thought I had, but I got it confused with Hollywood Squares. They had some common participants. Damned if the early Hollywood Squares wasn't some funny shit. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 Funny I would come across this thread. I was just watching one of the old Match Game reruns on the Game Show Network and saw Bret Somers and wondered if she was still alive? Very strange. This was a great show when game shows were alot of fun watching. Quote
Big Al Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Boy, I enjoyed her on Match Game. For the longest time, I had no idea why else she was famous besides Match Game. In the end, if that was all she was famous for, it would be enough. Her rapport with Charles Nelson Reilly (RIP) made for one of the finest underappreciated comedy teams. RIP, and thanks for the laffs! Quote
Kalo Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Another icon of my sadly misspent youth is gone! (No disrespect to Brett Sommers intended.) Quote
Kalo Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 I certainly watched my share of Match Game back in the day. I'd still love to score me one of those elongated Gene Rayburn microphones! Quote

JSngry Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Anybody remember the original Match Game on NBC, early-mid '60's? Not comedy oriented, and it was two celebrity-led teams competing, but Jayne Mansfield was a frequent celebrity captain... Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 loved the old match game, and she was great on the old Odd Couple - Reilly I could do without - too predictably "funny," but her I liked - and I had a weird encounter many years ago with Gene Rayburn (circa 1969) and he was one of the nastiest people I ever met - Quote

By the way, there's a clip of the old one on YouTube that features Jayne and an "up and coming" Orson Bean... Edited September 23, 2007 by Jazzmoose Quote

JSngry Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 And oh yeah, who wouldn't be "up and coming" around Jayne Mansfield? (you didn't think I was going to let that one slip away now, did you?) Quote
Free For All Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Famous photo of Jayne Mansfield and Sophia Loren. Quote
MoGrubb Posted September 24, 2007 Report Posted September 24, 2007 To think, Howard Hughes had a taste of that. Quote

I don't remember Jayne, but I do remember Carol Lawrence, Phyllis Newman and Rita Moreno being on a lot. Quote
