But given that Joe was a music teacher in Buffalo then, it seems very likely he played piano too... Wild he ended up with McCoy if that is corredct. Curious about Gayle playing "harp" also, presumably more Alice Coltrane than Julio Finn (harmonica). Edited June 18, 2023 by MomsMobley Quote

JSngry Posted June 18, 2023 Report Posted June 18, 2023 And now you are going to sell all his records, right? Quote
mjazzg Posted June 18, 2023 Report Posted June 18, 2023 That presupposes any were bought it the first place and if they were then it's a personal choice Quote
JSngry Posted June 18, 2023 Report Posted June 18, 2023 Imagine how much better he would play if he thought right. Quote
Justin V Posted June 18, 2023 Report Posted June 18, 2023 I saw Gayle play a solo concert maybe 6 years ago in Buffalo. I only had one of his albums and didn't know much about him. Maybe it was because he wasn't performing in character, but his spoken word was uncontroversial; I enjoyed the concert. Quote

Of course he can think whatever he wants to. I haven't suggested he can't nor do I intend to. Edited June 18, 2023 by mjazzg Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 18, 2023 Author Report Posted June 18, 2023 I don't agree with his political/social views at all (i.e., homophobia and anti-abortion) but I do think he is a fantastic saxophonist and musician. The "Streets" persona was not in full view on the occasions I saw him perform. It's unlikely he will perform or record again due to ongoing health issues but I could be wrong about that. For what it's worth I interviewed him several years ago and found him to be a very kind man and an affable, intriguing conversationalist. Quote
sonnymax Posted June 18, 2023 Report Posted June 18, 2023 It's one thing to hold such hateful views, it's another to use your platform as a musician to spread the hate. Quote
adh1907 Posted June 18, 2023 Report Posted June 18, 2023 “Completing the program is ‘Niger River’ by Albert Ayler”. Not aware of this, would that be ‘Deep River’ maybe? Quote
Pim Posted 7 hours ago Report Posted 7 hours ago (edited) maybe I’ve missed it but I can’t remember anyone mentioning this excellent 3LP set coming from the Milford Graves estate. It’s called WEBO. Highly energetic hypnotizing performance with Milford shining as the absolute star but Gayle and Parker are also excellent and I’m not necessarily a big fan of their playing. I really enjoy this set a lot plus it’s done very nicely with the photographs and beautiful artwork. Sound is top notch: cut by Kevin Gray and pressed by RTI Edited 7 hours ago by Pim Quote
clifford_thornton Posted 7 hours ago Author Report Posted 7 hours ago Yeah, that is a fabulous set indeed. Glad you picked one up. I wonder what goodies the Black Editions/Graves archive will uncover in the near future; I have heard that another trio set with Brötzmann is in the offing, and am hopeful that the Graves-Brötzmann duo also gets representation. I saw that duo once, at the Berlin Jazztage (or Berlin Jazz Fest, if you prefer), and would enjoy revisiting that music. Quote

I saw Gayle once at the Bimhuis with Parker and Rashied Ali. I remember that after 20 minutes or so I came in a trance like state. I am now on the fence for buying the 2 LP set with Brotzmann as well. For now I am enjoying this one Quote
clifford_thornton Posted 6 hours ago Author Report Posted 6 hours ago the 2LP set with PB is very strong. Also, Children of the Forest is incredible. saw Gayle with Graves, Parker, and Rudd, which was pretty interesting. Baraka read poems as well... one of many Vision Festival highlights over the decades. Judson Church sound wasn't the greatest, but the music itself was deep. Quote

I’m not the biggest Arthur Doyle fan but we’ll see. I love the artwork already anyway…. Quote
