That looks to be an interesting read, Durium--thanks. I'll try to post a link to it on the Night Lights site later this week. Did anybody ever see that Ellis documentary film that was making the rounds not long ago?

Maybe the thread title could have been a little more specific.

So I did:

Don Ellis - Ken Orton: "In Search of Don Ellis, Forgotten Genius”

Hope this is more specific !!

This is supposed to be fun. If I want rigorous rules, I will turn to my real life.

Start a new thread and tell us about it.

I was at the Monterey Jazz Festival over the weekend and Saturday afternoon they screened a documentary on Don Ellis called "Electric Heart: Don Ellis The Man, His Times, His Music". It was quite good. Before the film, his former pianist Milcho Leviev played some songs and talked about Ellis. The director followed up by talking about how hard it's been trying to get a distributor for the film.

What I got from both Leviev and the film maker was a supreme frustration about how Ellis' impact on the music has been overlooked. They both consider him one of the major musicians of the last 50 years.

This film is also being screened at The Northwest Film Forum in Seattle as part of the upcoming Earshot Jazz Festival.

Most people seem to approach his music from a superficial point of view. If Stan Kenton was important, so was Don Ellis, in at least the same way and quality. His dedication to the music was second to none.
