Top Ten Black Saint/Soul Note

eMusic announced "A jazz motherlode will arrive 11/18" and it's likely to be Black Saint/Soul Note. So let's have some top ten Black Saint/Soul Note lists to get our engines running. I have very few, but the very first Black Saint, Billy Harper - Black Saint would certainly top my list. The David Murray's are all already available on eMusic, but that's no reason to exclude them.

I like the Trio Hurricane - Suite of Winds disc.

Of course, any Bill Dixon will be stupendous, but really who wants to listen to that on their computer?

One needn't listen on computer speakers. I find emusic's mp3s more than acceptable for the cost. And in the case of BS/SN discs, I can barely find/buy them at any price.

I'd add Pieces of Time, the remarkable collaboration between Kenny Clarke, Milford Graves, Famoudou Don Moye and Andrew Cyrille to that list. But then, I'm a percussionholic...

There are so many. I'll have to think on it.

Same here. I'm really hoping this is the surprise for this reason.

My recommendations: the Tim Berne tiles, Julius Hemphill - Fat Man and the Hard Blues, all the World Saxophone Quartet albums, Pieces of Time...

Whew. There's a ton of good stuff.

Bill Dixon: November 1981

Cecil Taylor: Olu Iwa

Ray Anderson: Right Down Your Alley

Julius Hemphill: Raw Materials and Residuals

A couple of interesting sideman names:

Middy Middleton is on a couple of Odean Pope Saxophone Choir albums. I hadn't heard that name since the mid 70s at WRTI where we had a tape of Up From the Cellar, Down From the Attic, his great band with Michael Ray.

James Carter and Carl Grubbs pop up on Julius Hemphill dates.

Jay Hoggard on a Chico Freeman Quartet date.

Some excellent Italian jazz too - Gianluigi Trovesi, Guido Manusardi, Tiziano Tononi, Giorgio Gaslini and others.

I wondered if this might happen given that Camjazz have acquired BS/SN and that Camjazz's titles go straight to e-music.

...Has anybody heard the Jeff Palmers?

I have Island Universe. It's a fine recording although I probably wouldn't put it up in the rarefied "tops" as far as Black Saint/Soul Note in general goes.

Birth and Rebirth, the Max Roach/Anthony Braxton duo recording, is brilliant. That's one more that I would classify as essential.
