Shawn Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081105/ap_en_ot/obit_crichton Sad news, I've been a fan ever since I read The Andromeda Strain when I was 10. The man had a very interesting mind. Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 That really is a shock. I too remember reading Andromeda Strain, after I saw the original movie adaptation. I stopped reading him a long time ago but sad news nonetheless. Quote
Free For All Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 Sad news on an otherwise very happy day! I've read many of his books- I enjoyed "Timeline", one of his lesser-known ones. Great escapism. RIP Quote
AndrewHill Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 Same here, kind of a shock considering that he wasn't that old. RIP. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 I prefer Eaters of the Dead, but interesting writer. I can't comment too much on him without getting the thread moved to the political forum, so I'll shut up... Quote
BruceH Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 Quite a surprise, this. He kept his cancer quiet; shocking how many people have been taken from us by cancer. The Andromeda Strain was on TV just a few days ago! I remember watching it on TV way back in the 70's. I also remember Westworld, which hasn't aged well. Quote
GA Russell Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 Some years ago I saw him on the Charlie Rose Show promoting his latest book. Crichton said something, to which Rose responded, "That's stupid." So Crichton pretty much shut up the rest of the interview. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 actaully the only fiction author i ever read multiple books from without being forced to. when i was real young and after the jarrasic movie came out, i read a few of the books- they were easy to read and exciting i guess, but now that i know that fiction, is the greatest charrade of humankind, he'll remain the only author ive read forever Quote
Aggie87 Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 but now that i know that fiction, is the greatest charrade of humankind Huh? Can you explain that one? Quote
Jazzmoose Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 but now that i know that fiction, is the greatest charrade of humankind Huh? Can you explain that one? Fifty bucks on "no"... Quote
Tom Storer Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 Quite a surprise, this. He kept his cancer quiet I'm told that as recently as June he appeared in good health and gave no indication that he was ill. Quote
BruceH Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 but now that i know that fiction, is the greatest charrade of humankind Huh? Can you explain that one? Fifty bucks on "no"... Perhaps he found out that "fiction," by definition, means "made up." How devastating. Quote
RDK Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 And just when I thought that Aric couldn't say anything more to surprise us... Quote
BFrank Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 He was quite delusional about global warming, though. Spent quite a bit of time the last few years speaking about there being no truth to it. Quote
BruceH Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 He was quite delusional about global warming, though. Spent quite a bit of time the last few years speaking about there being no truth to it. So I'd heard. It made me rather glad that I never bought any of his books. Quote
Shrdlu Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 Ah, the spelling reassures my faith in our wonderful education system, lol. I remember grading university math papers and seeing the number 2 written as to. Quote
Indestructible! Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 Ah, the spelling reassures my faith in our wonderful education system, lol. I remember grading university math papers and seeing the number 2 written as to. Yes, but what grade would you give for a paper with "lol" in it? Quote
