Unreleased live Ellington from that era?:excited: But it all looks good!

Live From The Cotton Club, plus ...

The Cotton Club, 1923-1940, is still the most famous jazz club of all time. Run by the underworld and patronised by New York's high society, 'The Aristocrat of Harlem' employed the cream of African-American entertainers, dancers and musicians. Duke Ellington was just one of many who made his name there. It was the focal point of the Harlem Renaissance, and now an important new Bear Family release takes you back there. During the night of April 20-21, 1931, a German commentator broadcast live from the Cotton Club, but the recordings lay dormant in the vaults, until they were discovered and identified by the legendary John Hammond’s former assistant, Michael Brooks.

The broadcast highlights artists who otherwise left few recordings, or none at all (Cab Calloway's orchestra accompanies such stars-in-their-day as Lethia Hill, Eddie Rector and The Cotton Club Trio). The show is also among the earliest surviving sound documents of German radio.

In addition, the 2-CD-Set contains commercial recordings from the Cotton Club era, including a 1929 attempt to re-create the live atmosphere of the Cotton Club in the recording studio. Other artists, most of whom were destined to become Cotton Club stars in later years, are also featured. The set is rounded out with a previously unissued take, recorded in 1937 by 'The Tramp Band' which, with different personnel, excited Cotton Club audiences during the 1920s, plus previously unissued live recordings from Duke Ellington at the Cotton Club.

The accompanying hardcover book by Horst J. P. Bergmeier and Rainer E. Lotz is profusely illustrated. It traces the development of Harlem, explains the interrelation between club management and organized crime, documents the details of Cotton Club shows from beginning to the end, and researches the biographies of the individuals involved. Much of the factual information as well as the illustrations and of course the broadcast are presented here for the first time.

David:

Are the commercial recordings from the Duke Ellington Orchestra included those recorded April 12, 1929 in New York (Liederkranz Hall) for RCA-Victor, originally issued as Pirate MPC-524, and included in the Bluebird reissue "Jungle nights in Harlem"? This is the line-up for that session:

Duke Ellington & His Cotton Club Orchestra: Freddy Jenkins, Arthur Whetsel, Cootie Williams, t; Joe Nanton, tb; Barney Bigard, cl, ts; Johnny Hodges, as, ss, cl; Harry Carney, bs, cl, as; Duke Ellington, p; Fred Guy, bj; Wellman Braud, b; Sonny Greer, d; with Harmonica Charlie and comments by Irving Mills.

Looks like a great set!

FWIW, some Ellington Cotton Club broadcasts have been released in the past. I've got one on Jazz Anthology/Musidisc that dates from 1938, and it is superb.

Funny you bought those JazzAnthology/Musidisc bootlegs from France while I was chasing the US-published Jazz Archives LPs which had the original Duke Ellington unissued material from the Cotton Club. Hard to find those in Paris at the time (these were vinyl days).

I've read somewhere that Irving Mils voice was overdubbed on some studio Ellington's recordings - Mils explained such things as live from Cotton Club - so, some of them are fake one.

Hope that such kind of material are not included in this set.

M, that would be those listed above, I believe:

Duke Ellington: A Nite At The Cotton Club – Part 1a (Cotton Club Stomp)

Duke Ellington: A Nite At The Cotton Club – Part 1b (Misty Mornin’)

Duke Ellington: A Nite At The Cotton Club – Part 2a (Goin’ To Town)

Duke Ellington: A Nite At The Cotton Club – Part 2b

Good stuff!

I've got two 1938 cds of Ellington from the CC on Jazz Archives . . . great performances, sound is . . . okay.

EUR 76,69

Could somebody interpret this for me? Sounds expensive, but I'm ignorant about translating the Euro currency into dollars.

€76.69 = about $90 at yesterday's exchange rate (€1 = $1.175 / $1 = €0.85)

Edit: the exchange rate on Tuesday, 11/18 is €1 = $1.195 / $1 = €0.835

Deepdiscountcd.com has it for $47.41 (free shipping)

http://www.deepdiscountcd.com/index.cfm?re...pc=001271634000

Does this set come with a big book or booklet?

Seems like it priced for 3 discs (or 2 discs and a book).

Unbelievably, I just got notice from Deep Discount that this shipped today at the $47 price. I truly didn't expect them to come through with it! Yee ha...

(And yes, it's supposed to come with a hardcover book--frankly, $47 ain't a bad price for a 2-CD Bear box these days.)

An outrageous price for 2 CDs of material that presumably didn't cost the Bears much money--if anything. They may have spent a good deal of money to obtain clean transfers, but, even so.

This sort of thing ought not be encouraged.

Just got my box today after Deep Discount had forgotten about my order for a month and I had not bothered them because they are notoriously slow. When I called the error to their attention, they had it to me in a couple of days.

I paid $48 for this 2-cd set. Here's what I got: a large square box (with a handsome picture of the Club) which holds a 121 page hard back book with a ton of cool pictures and 2 cds. I just popped 1 cd in and, on my not so hot office cd player, the sound is simply incredible. Why, just now it's Dukey playing something not on my RCA set....Sounds like the Orchestra is in my office.

This is my first Bear set...but if all of them are of this quality, I'm gettin' into C&W. To me, this is well worth the price.

No chance to really read the book, but there is significant text as well as pictures, many of them professional promo shots. Did see the bibliography, which is longer than the one in my senior thesis...hmmm, guess that's not that impressive.

I put disc 1 in and started listening. One warning: there is a woman, speaking German, who does a voiceover over on tracks one and three which mostly obscures the music. On track four, she explains it's Eddie Cantor singing, which comes on at the end of the track, then she comes on track five again at the beginning. But, I jumped to tracks 10 and 11 and she is not there. So, beware if you don't like foreign language overdubs.
