Thanks folks. It was a good one. My wife got me a 1945 edition of  'A history of Europe' by HAL Fisher, which I got my Mum to get me when I was 10 and really got me to realise all history was connections and MUCH more interesting than school history. Years later, I found out he was the British Minister of Education in 1918 and pushed through the most important education legislation ever. The Education Act 1918 is one of VERY few here that's named after the guy who pushed it through - it made school compulsory up to 14 and started further education colleges. I'm sure it's as out of date as it's out of print now, but it was one of the first that tried to draw things together coherently and that vision of connectedness isn't something that I think would fade. I'd mentioned it to her a while back and forgotten about it. Lovely surprise!
