chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 since deciding that i now must buy all the 1st pressings, i am telling you, ive hit a few roadblocks. some of these, are just insanely expensive. are these some of the most expensive jazz lps of all time? and why are they still SO MUCH? i want to replace as many mcmaster cds as i can w/ original vangelders, however i settled, until i find the orig., a 70s hi voltage that still uses the vangelder stamper- sounds amazing Quote
jostber Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 Some more on that here: http://jazzcollector.com/blue-note/for-the...-newk-and-hank/ http://jazzcollector.com/blue-note/mobley-...or-price-guide/ Better get the vinyl reissues instead? http://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?get=results Quote
brownie Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 I would say: forget about BN original pressings. The Mobleys are way beyond any normal person's means. Instead I would concentrate on getting the Japanese King pressings now. Quality of the covers and the vinyls is - most of the time - just about as good as the BNs you can find. Those King LPs are still pretty accessible. And bound to be very expensive in a few years' time. Quote

The trade in those original Blue Notes from the 50s is a racket worthy of Dubai real estate purveyors. The Kings are highly recommended. Alternative - get the Mosaic Mobley 50s set on vinyl or look out for Mobley reissues in the Music Matters 2x45rpm series. 'Roll Call' is just out ! Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 29, 2009 Author Report Posted November 29, 2009 1st off brownie ive never seeen that jazzcollector site before: ill be checkin that one out today, thanks 2ndly- ill have to respectfully disagree about the kings. sure, the kings will tide be over till i score the orginals. but i want the original product, i dont care what condition. one day maybe ill find a copy of HANK in the 5 dollar bin cause its scratched beyond all means. this is how i found a copy of a few records on MODE that book real high, but they were beat to hell, so cheap. not every copy of HANK is in pristine condition i bet: what i need to do i think, is track on ebay one that is not collectors quality. i was just bidding on a peckin time, it sold for 255. my high bid was 50. there was like 10 hrs left and no one bid on it. it closed for 255. the other day on ebay i bid on a while label this was jethro tull promo and it sold for 7.99. so deals sometime can be had on ebay. so far i have an original No Room (mint, my 1st jazz record ever), Reach Out!, then a 70s repress of Hi Voltage w/ the vangelder stampers that sounds like the 1st run im SURE! chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 29, 2009 Author Report Posted November 29, 2009 ok, so WHENS THE MARKET GOING TO DROP OUT. these 1000K + prices are not going to last forever someday all these old collectors will be dead, and no one is going to buy them for 1000. there will be a shift in prices im sure of it at some point. in the 70s and 80s, i bet you a copy of HANK wasnt 3000. chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 29, 2009 Author Report Posted November 29, 2009 by the way, saw this lp from the late 70s i think-- Helen Merrill is HOT Quote
sidewinder Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 then a 70s repress of Hi Voltage w/ the vangelder stampers that sounds like the 1st run im SURE! Quite possibly, as this was a Liberty era original. A nice sounding session, heck even my Pathe Marconi 80s DMM of this sounds good ! Quote
sidewinder Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 so far i have an original No Room (mint, my 1st jazz record ever) Saw a fairly beat up looking mono copy in one of the stores over here for £8. Should have bought it as it's quite possible it would have sounded much better than it looked (Blue Note LPs are nuclear hardened). The laminated cover wasn't in bad nick either ! Quote
porcy62 Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 (edited) The trade in those original Blue Notes from the 50s is a racket worthy of Dubai real estate purveyors. Well, a guy just offered me a nice penthouse in Dubai for my original Roll Call, I refused since I like chianti and prosciutto and because Dubai real estate aren't very cool nowadays. But you could take a fast boat over to that Italian theme island they are/were planning and pick up some imported Ital-digestibles ! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 I'd take Brownie's advice as well. Most of these I have in King or Toshiba Japanese pressings (at least the 1500 series). The Van Gelder Liberty's of his 4000 series LPs all sound good, so I can vouch for those as well. The early Mobley BNs have been at the $1000+ mark for years with no sign of slowing. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 30, 2009 Author Report Posted November 30, 2009 ok ok i guarnteee you not ever one of hanks 50s lps exist in a decent status. eg. a few mos. ago some dude was posting a dozen really rare sun ra saturn titles, at only 45 bucks buy it now, cause they were in beyond fucked up condition. i, being chewy, need to set my slights lower. i need someone to list a less than perfect, or much less, copy--- i need to wait for something of that sort, or ideally find as many locally as i can, which as you know is hard when you life in only one place Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 30, 2009 Author Report Posted November 30, 2009 dont get me wrong i prefer nice, my no room in stone cold mint and my reach out is also nice Quote
brownie Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 Good luck chewy in your search for Mobley originals. Been down that road for a long time and did not find much. Just for your information, here is the current Mobley page on eBay! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 Seem to be a few originals on that page. I suppose the prices will go sky high in the last ten seconds. MG Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 30, 2009 Author Report Posted November 30, 2009 Brownie, you KNEWHank--- its okay if you settle for the King Pressings.......... Quote
Shrdlu Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 Aric, they're right. Whenever a Hank LP goes on eBay, some Japanese high roller puts in a $2000 bid that drowns out all other bids. I think the price the BN LPs go for is utterly ridiculous. I was around when they were readily available, and they were great of course, but we didn't worship the things. There are many other labels, such as Impulse, that are just as good. For some reason, you can pick up Impulses in fine condition on eBay for no more than $20, usually less. I'd settle for good CDs, such as TOCJs, and let the anguish go. I have all the Hanks on TOCJ if you need any copies. Quote
kh1958 Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 I have three original (or semi-original) Hank LPs-- Workout and Dippin' (New York USA) and The Flip (Liberty)--but I don't expect to get any more on LP unless I get lucky--no way would I pay the prices they sell for on ebay--I'm otherwise fine with the Mosaic set and various other CDs. JSngry Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 You know, if all you want is the document, the object, then snap up everything you see. At this point, it's all going to be hard to find, but, honestly, if I see an "original" in trashed condition for a decent price, I buy it just to have the object. And looking for stuff like this, usually the older the copy, the more trashed it is. Butit's all hard to find anybmore. 15-20 years ago, not so hard, 30 years ago, you just had to work at it. But yeah, getting them for the love of just having a copy, not some weird erection-inducing fetish, but just knowing that it's a true pieve of history, even if it is fucked up beyond all practical usage, and definitely unattractive to the fetishists, hey, that's kinda like taking in stray dogs and old folks, and I think there's a "special place in heaven" for people who do that.
