John L Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 I understoond Cuscuna's comment not to mean that Dorham was not playing well himself, but that he seemed to be impatient with the session, and was therefore vocally discouraging taking additional time for rehearsals. On the other hand, we know that Horace Silver was quite a perfectionist. There are quite likely some sublime moments on those tapes. I am sure that I would like them. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted June 1, 2010 Author Report Posted June 1, 2010 so you're saying it was a mistake for horace to bring back in his 1st trumpter player, and kenny was all out of control that day, oooo where was hank that day, he should of been there w/ Jr Cook instead of Jimmy Heath!!! brownie Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 It was not my intention to dis KD, who happens to be one of my favorite musicians. That was understood from the start! Dorham was pretty strong-minded. Remember the problems Cecil Taylor had with him and his playing on the 'Hard Driving Jazz' session! Glad that one was released. I am just keeping hoping that the Silver session will see the light of the day! Quote
sidewinder Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 Something tells me that we will get to hear Tyrone's train wreck before this one (on a day when flying pigs go past the window). Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 Yeah, and those pigs will be piloting space transports before we hear the Grant Green/Gene Harris session. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 Yeah, and those pigs will be piloting space transports before we hear the Grant Green/Gene Harris session. Still no sign of this session... MG Quote
jazzbo Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 Something tells me that we will get to hear Tyrone's train wreck before this one (on a day when flying pigs go past the window). Well, you're 100% right I think. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 (edited) This should clear up the issue of how and why the tapes reverted back to Horace. Cuscuna writes in a blog post today that, with permission of his bosses at United Artists in 1979, he traded away all of the unissued material in the vaults that Horace deemed unworthy of release in exchange for Horace's permission to release the previously unissued material and singles that showed up on "Sterling Silver." I don't think I've ever heard this explanation before ...http://mosaicrecords.tumblr.com/post/103926030585/about-a-horace-silver-bue-note-rarity-sterling Edited December 2, 2014 by Mark Stryker Quote
Dan Gould Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 and I am certain I never heard of the Live at Pep's performances being "disastrous". Quote
JSngry Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 Maybe there were technical problems. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 and I am certain I never heard of the Live at Pep's performances being "disastrous". I'm actually trying to get some clarity from Cuscuna about what exactly it was about those Pep's recordings that merited description as "disastrous." Will report back with new any news. Quote
soulpope Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 (edited) Maybe there were technical problems. Carmell Jones - ongoing problem with his trumpet`s mouthpiece ??.....I`ve read that somewhere but unfortunately can`t rememeber the source.... Edit : The Live at Pep's and Tentet stuff was given back to Horace I'm told and I also asked Horace about it and he said the tentet stuff was quite sloppy, the ensembles a mess etc etc. I think I was told the Pep's stuff was rejected because Carmell Jones was having chop problems on this, can't remember for sure though.
