Now where is the 1965 Brandeis Concert, one track of which was on the long oblivious Misterioso LP? Where is the live track from Mexico with Bubeck? Will we ever see a proper reissue of these? Probably not. That's why I don't like these boxes.

Mike, those have been added to one of the Newport discs in this set.

Thanks, that looks quite interesting - only have the first CD included in the set. And it's fairly cheap for an 8-disc set, too!

You're welcome. I think you'll enjoy this set.

Ah, I see ... thanks for this info. But buy the whole box just for a handful of tracks?

Hey, I understand. I went for it hoping a few of the releases sound better. . . and they do sound a bit better. And I have them all in one place, which I like.

Amazon (US) has lowered the price of the Ellington Columbia Vol 2 box to $64.01, but still shows it as unavailable.  However, there are a number of third party listings with new copies from as low as 29.86, the usual UK sellers.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00YY03SG0/ref=tmm_acd_new_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=new&coliid=I3DG49XOSB6AIE&colid=10J7HIZL7X4LA&qid=&sr=

If you pay a a bit more you can get it from a US seller.  You have to scroll down a bit to get to them.

The posting on this thread sure has slowed down, hasn't it?  Maybe some good deals will be had before Christmas.

Here are the current prices of some OAS's and OAC's.  Each is less than $12.00 + $3.99 shipping.

www.Grooves-Inc.com is offering a 20% discount with coupon code HZG3969 that is good until December 3, 2015.  Shipping is free, and there is no state sales tax (at least for me in California).

I purchased the recently released 4-CD boxed set, "The Complete Matrix Tapes", by the Velvet Underground for $33.91.  There are good base prices (i.e., before the application of any discounts) on several recent releases such as the three-CD set of "A Love Supreme" (i.e., The Complete Masters - Super Deluxe) ($24.02) and "Frank Sinatra, A Voice on the Air - 1935 - 1955" ($45.55) - I'm sure that there must be other sets that would be of interest.

These live Monk tracks are available for individual download on qobuz (in cd quality).

Where have they been released before? The Brandeis one is from Misterioso but I'm struggling to find where the others were originally released.

The track "Blues" (often mistitled C-Jam Blues) with Brubeck from a Mexican tour was in Brubeck's Summit Sessions album;

Thelonious Monk Quartet And Dave Brubeck : Charlie Rouse (ts) Thelonious Monk (p) Dave Brubeck (p-1) added, Larry Gales (b) Ben Riley (d)
Live "Auditoria de la Reforma", Puebla, Mexico, May 12, 1967
Green chimneys    (unissued)
Don't blame me (tm p-solo)    Columbia Legacy C3K64887 [CD]
Evidence    (unissued)
Blues (cr out,1)    Columbia C30522, CBS (Eu)S64377, Columbia Legacy 88697-99580-2 [CD]

Note:    Columbia C30522, CBS (Eu)S64377, both titled "Dave Brubeck : Summit sessions".
"Blues" mistitled as "C-jam blues" on most issues.

Monk's solo on "Don't Blame Me" from the same concert was first issued on the 3-CD box Orrin Keepnews had compiled for Columbia, "The Columbia Years '62-'6".

But there's another version of  that tune:

Thelonious Monk (p)
Live, "Atlanta Stadium", Atlanta, GA, June 16, 1967
Don't blame me    CBS 45358, (Eu)466103-1, Col CK45358 [CD], CBS (Eu)466103-2 [CD], Columbia Legacy 88697-99580-2 [CD]

The others are from "Straight No Chaser--The Motion Picture Soundtrack". . . .

Not quite - see my post above. Only the second version of "Don't Blame Me" was in the soundtrack.

Thanks - as I have the soundtrack and the DVD, too, besides all previous CD reissues, downloading single tracks from Qobuz seems to be the option for me.

Still it's too bad they didn't go for completing those concert recordings - or did they? Anything previously unissued?

Nothing previously unissued in this set. I think that this set includes all the live Monk released so far.

I have not idea what really might remain of these recordings. . . its possible not much was recorded at Brandeis for example. This is likely all we will get for now.

now those Coltrane rehearsals are certainly not essential, but the whole thing is great, with plenty of photos and all ...

So, how many volumes of "Creed Taylor Collection" will there be? And after it's all done, are you sure they won't be issued again combined in one 150 or some CDs box, like they do with classical boxes nowadays.

"Orrin Keepnews Collection", "RVG collection", "Creed Taylor Collection", "Monk Collection", "Ellington Collection"- over and over and over again. I only wish someone would lavish such attention on the fact that Plugged Nickel is still out of print. Or Braxton's Willisau set. Or LaMonte Young's Well Tuned Piano. Or John Carter's Roots & Folklore series, etc, etc.

There was supposed to be a 50 CD box of Impulse stuff come out for the 50th anniversary, but apparently that idea got scrapped.  I even remember seeing a listing of the 50 albums that were going to be on it.

... uhm, what's going on here? had this happen several times today ... anyway, tend to agree in some respects but no in others - i.e. Monk and Ellington deserve all attention they get, and Ellington is NOT being reissued over and over again at all ... Sony stopped their programme, lots of stuff needs to be sought on vinyl or on old used discs, some only released in France ... and we're not speaking obscure avantgarde music of the seventies but some of the greatest music ever made ...

but yeah, I'd love to see those John Carter albums around again, and I'll be buying the Braxton reissues as soon as they appear for sure!

on the other hand, the Plugged Nickel set was around for a few years, it cost an arm and a leg (around 200$ in shops over here, and I bought it while still in school ... took me a while to save that money!) ... nowadays of course it would be a small "book"-like set, 20€ or people will scream "much too expensive" ... but I guess that's the only "market" that's left for physical product, sometimes I really think it's a disgrace ... point being: the 10'000 folks who bought that box when it was around are probably about the number of people that were ever going to buy this, a few missed out/are too young/found out too late, as always (and of course I'm in that camp about other stuff, and I've often delved into my pocked deeply to make up for it, too, a day after buying twice the amount of music for a third or a flatted fifth of the same price) ...

there was even a picture at one time:

Impulse_at_50_zpsa67e62a4.jpg

the contents weren't that exciting ('xept for Rivers' "Streams" that was to be included) ... seemed like a rather odd hodge-podge
