Stan Getz Quintets: The Clef & Norgran Studio Albums

As long as it has all the Getz-Brookmeyer studio recordings, I'm happy. It is astonishing that they've never been done properly. I did a Spotify playlist and put it up in my blog, and the music is incredible. I've lobbied for a 3-CD set with all the SG-BB 1953-1954 recordings (studio plus At the Shrine); besides the music itself, Brookmeyer and pianist John Williams are alive and well as far as I know, and that'd make a nice interview for the liner notes.

What I do hope (in vain, I guess) is that the Hip-O guys review their prices. At least in Europe they're simply ridiculous.

Amazon.com lists it with a February 2011 release date.

Really looking forward to this! :) I suggested something like this to Mosaic Records almost three years ago. Michael Cuscuna told me that Verve had shot down their idea to do a big Getz box including this material earlier, but he thanked me for bringing up the idea again because he thought they would probably be more receptive to the idea of such a 3CD set today. Guess they were! :)

Details on the Hip-O site

What Quintet does for both the Getz and Granz legacies is present the recordings in their original 10-inch LP form – Stan Getz Plays, The Artistry of Stan Getz and the three Interpretations LPs – while adding the singles not on the LPs and other bonus material from the sessions. While Getz in the period from late 1952 through early 1955 recorded with a core quintet – particularly with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer – included in the bonus material are quartet dates featuring drummer Max Roach. Most appealing for the jazz fan is the discovery of three previously unreleased alternate takes recently discovered in the Verve vault.

Good news about the release but......£50 is a bit pricey for me. I'll wait and see whether I can pick it up cheaper later.

Same here. Hip-O CD-sets have a standard price tag of just under $20 per disc, which is a bit steep in my opinion. They're often cheaper on Amazon.

Stan Getz: The 1953-54 Morgran Studio Sessions (4 Audiophile LPs)

(Release Date; May 2011)

Even in a career as celebrated and prolific as Stan Getz's, there are pockets of neglected gems that dot the landscape. In the case of Getz, one of those overlooked areas is his 1953-54 Clef Norgan recordings with a working quintet that included valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyeer and pianist Johnny Williams (who later became film composer John Williams). The band recorded several excellent albums for Clef and Norgran during those years, but when Clef and Norgran were phased out and the material was recycled on Verve, the tracks from these recording sessions were scattered over many 12" LPs which combined them with other groups from other sessions and some were forgotten altogether.

So the impact of the body of work that this group left behind was diluted by the manner in which it was re-released on Verve in the decades that followed. This Mosaic LP-only set returns to the original LP masters and sequence to restore clarity and shape to this exceptional quintet.

When Brookmeyer left Getz to join Gerry Mulligan, legendary trumpeter Tony Fruscella replaced him in the final months of the band, long enough to record two extended tunes included here. Midway through the quintet's life, Getz recorded a little-known but superb quartet session with Jimmy Rowles, Bob Whitlock and Max Roach, the four sides of which were also released in splintered form throughout the hears.

Now all of this material is gathered in one place on four 180-gram audiophile LPs with three previously unissued alternate takes and the 78 take of "Pot Luck", giving the music its full due and historical perspective.

I don't get this partnership at all...

Hip-O-Select is a relatively new player with overpriced recordings and mediocre packaging... Why not release the Getz as a Mosaic Select? I hope this is not a portend of things to come.... :(

Hip-O or its parent company probably holds the copyright, and was willing to let Mosaic do the LPs to coincide with its own CD release. I've been wanting these "Interpretations" recordings for a while, and am happy that they are coming out. Some of them were available in Japanese CDs, but not all. And the only other alternative was buying very expensive or very scratched-up LPs.

Correct. Hip-O's owners, Universal, would not allow Mosaic to do a CD-set.

Apparently the Mosaic Getz will not include the 1952 sides that the Hip-O Select 3CD-set has. I've asked Mosaic about this. I will post their reply here.

So does this mean that Hip-O-Select is the new bully on the block... :(

My main issue is that their stuff is really overpriced (presumably justified by them with extremely mediocre and unnecessary packaging...)... I thought we were done with BAD overpriced packaging at the end of the 1990s :( :(

J.A.W.: just to be sure - the quartet date with Rowles and Roach will be included, then - this one:

Stan Getz Quartet : Stan Getz (ts) Jimmy Rowles (p) Bob Whitlock (b) Max Roach (d)

Hollywood, January 23, 1954

10. I Hadn’t Anyone ’Til You

11. Down by the Sycamore Tree

12. With the Wind and the Rain in Your Hair

13. Nobody Else But Me

14. I Hadn’t Anyone ’Til You (Alternate Take)

15. Nobody Else But Me (Alternate Take)

It's been on the CD of "Plays", that's why I'm asking... and I'd hate to miss out on the new alternate takes by buying the Mosaic LP set (which I'll probably rather do than getting the Hip-O, now that I have the choice... but then the Mosaic price will be even more ridiculous than the Hip-O, I assume...)

They mentioned the quartet date with Rowles, Whitlock and Roach in their e-mail and on their site, so yes, I guess it will be included. As it looks now the 1952 stuff will not be included, so if you want it you'll have to get the Hip-O Select set - unless Mosaic will include it after all.

Mosaic issued the 1952 items before in their first Getz set.

Ah yes - and their policy keeps them from releasing it again.

No problem with me - although I had to piece the Getz/Raney set together with various CDs (but then the Roost 3CD set is as fine a unit, I guess, as was the Mosaic!)

It's not unprecidented for Mosaic to release a vinyl edition of another label's CD release. Sony's Miles boxed sets were dealt with in this way.

I imagine Universal thinks that a CD release would do well in the stores while a vinyl one would be better off in the specialist mail-order market.

Agree with you about Hip-O's price/packaging, though.

So do I. And I also have problems with their usually quite "loud" and sometimes harsh-sounding mastering. I hope the Getz set will not be as loud and harsh as some of their other sets.
