This weekend Roy Eldridge, Mr. Little Jazz, was born 100 years ago. This great trumpet player, now almost forgotten, could be labelled as the link between the older generation of trumpet players and the beboppers like Dizzy Gillespie, Howard McGhee and Clifford Brown.

One of the great trumpet players in jazz history. I still recall seeing a trumpet battle between Roy Eldridge and Charlie Shavers at a JATP

Concert in Detroit in circa 1953 or 54. This was one of the first jazz concerts I ever attended.

I recommend this biography.

Love Roy Eldridge!

The Mosaic was a revelation in many respects!

Also the Paris 1950 recordings are pretty good... and some later Pablo stuff, too!

And the trumpet/drum duos done for Granz are a fine proof (if any is needed!) of how adventuresome a musician Roy was!
