clifford_thornton Posted December 17, 2024 Report Posted December 17, 2024 Solo Lacy is a very different album. I like the duo with Altena but it's quite different than Maarten's own records. It would have been interesting to hear the Altena of Stairs! and Porto Novo in duo with Lacy (or trio with Bennink) ca. 1967, though Lumps is a pretty enjoyable affair as well. Lacy was quite raucous in those years! Quote
Pim Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 I’d like to create one in jazzdisco.org style. I’ll make it as complete as possible. @mhatta is it true that you’re connected to that website? If so is there interest in a Steve Lacy disco? 10 hours ago, JSngry said: The Senators site is long gone, right? I don’t know that one. Quote
JSngry Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 It lives! I thought it had left. http://senators.free.fr/web_stuff/NavbarFrames/Framesets/FrSet_Welcome.html Browse using the menu at the bottom of the page! Quote

It doesn;t give the possibility to actually scroll chronologically trough his discography or does it? Quote
JSngry Posted August 4 Report Posted August 4 That i don't know. It's been years since I looked at it, when Lacy was alive still. I suppose I would recommend just poking around the different links and see what happens. There seem to be a lot of ways to go. Interactive discography http://senators.free.fr/web_stuff/Images/navigation/fleche_droite.gif Make your own research by year, label, album, musician or composition And from there you can search by year Quote

corto maltese Posted 10 hours ago Report Posted 10 hours ago Be careful though, Pim, Lacy is just as addictive as Waldron. Once you've really caught the bug, you'll want to hear everything. And the discography is massive, with some releases frustratingly difficult to find (not to mention the prices). Quote

Yeah I’ve noticed it. It’s a lovely but huge discography to explore. I still have to skip the records where Irene Aebi is present in a very dominant way because I still have trouble enjoying her singing. I can have it in small doses though and that’s a step for me Still lots of works to discover. What a fascinating musician he was. Quote

Once this happened to me I just kept going. Waldron is similar. Aebi is an acquired taste but a number of the songs I cannot think of without hearing her voice in my head, and that's a good thing. I would of course still kill for reissues of the Japanese albums, especially The Wire. I kind of can't believe those still remain untouched when so many other impossible JP grails have managed to come out. Regarding the discography, I did run into a bit of a wall myself personally. I have over 100 Lacy recordings, and a got to a point where most of what remains is either a reification of contexts I have in great number, or far too rare and expensive to pursue. As such it's been a number of years since I've added a title to the collection. Maybe the bug will come back to me again someday. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted 1 hour ago Report Posted 1 hour ago yeah, I would assume the reason for The Wire not getting reissued is that Denon doesn't have any interest. Dusted that LP off recently and it's a great date, but the audience might be smaller than, say, for an obscure but funky Jiro Inagaki album (and don't get me wrong, I like those too). Quote
