JohnJ Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Very sorry to hear this. Love 'Ballads for Trane', a desert island disc for me. Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Sorry to hear this. Joe Lee Wilson was always an up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__cI-uX72VMRIP. Quote
Christiern Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Valerie Wilmer introduced us in the '70, and I got to know Joe Lee fairly well (the only jazz musician I knew of in New York who got around on a bicycle). A very down-to-earth guy. This is sad news, indeed. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 (edited) Sorry to hear this - RIP. "Within half an hour he had discovered the betting shop and within a day thrust a large sum of money into my hands – my "share" of his winnings. He cooked, washed clothes and did the ironing, then when Jill arrived, they raided the butcher's for lamb chops and goat, and he cooked up enough to last us a week." Sounds like a great guy. Never realised he lived in latter years in Brighton, either. Edited July 19, 2011 by sidewinder Quote
paul secor Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Good singer - know him mainly from recordings with Archie Shepp. Thanks, Mr. Wilson. Quote
mikeweil Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 The sound of his voice was unique - sorry to hear this. I remember hearing him first on Mtume's Alkebu-Lan, side by side with Andy Bey. Never forgot that sound ... Quote
jazzbo Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 JOOOOOHHHHHHN COLTRAAAAAAAAAANE! Now maybe there will be a reply to that shout, "What's up Joe Lee." Quote
brownie Posted July 23, 2011 Author Report Posted July 23, 2011 Obituary in The New York Times today. Quote
randyhersom Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 His version of Charles Greenlee's Crucificado which I knew in an instrumental version from the Archie Shepp Montreux Freedoms was always a favorite and I've collected and followed ever since so this loss is right up there with Walt Dickerson and Max Roach for me.
