I hadn't heard of her before either, but what a tragic and meaningless thing to happen. She was young, had great plans, and then just a second of inattention and all is gone. It reminds us how much we take things for granted that really can't be taken for granted.

The New York Post has more info:

A beautiful Italian jazz singer -- who just moved to Manhattan to take her career to the next level -- was fatally mowed down by an SUV on the Upper West Side just seconds after getting out of a taxi cab, authorities said yesterday.

Daniela D’Ercole, 32, a striking red-haired vocalist who grew up in rural southern Italy, was struck just before midnight as she crossed Broadway at West 106th Street by a 2002 Mercury.

“She crossed against the light and had an umbrella,” a law-enforcement source said. “She probably didn’t see.”

A video of the grisly accident showed D’Ercole’s body flying across several lanes of traffic.

“She had one eye open, took a deep breath and that was it,” said a doorman nearby. “It seems like she didn’t even see that car coming, it happened so fast.”

The tragedy stunned friends and colleagues who watched in admiration as D’Ercole’s music career began to take off.

“She could have climbed to the top,” said Enrico Granafei, the owner of Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair, NJ, where D’Ercole performed last month.

“She had all the qualities: the seriousness, the determination, the talent.”

Maks one ill just to hear of it. The article quoted speaks of a video of the accident. How or why should there be one? I hope nothing like that circulates on the Internet. It only degrades the victim. Something very sick about that.

Surveillance camera, I guess. I remember seeing such videos posted on YouTube where people actually miraculously escaped.

Since I started working in a transport service for handicapped people two years ago, I see irresponsible behavior every day - all ages, all social groups. Cell phones are a pest, in particular - business men driving expensive cars unable to buy a wireless transmission driving with one hand in difficult situations, because they are pressing their cellphone to an ear; kids stopping in the middle of the street 'cause their friend just told them something exciting over the cell phone ....

I really pity that singer, but if reports are to be trusted, she crossed the street without really looking - that almost happened to me once, and I was lucky, but it was close. And even if you're watching out, it could be the others being unattentive. Swinging Swede is absolutely right with his statement ...

R.I.P. Daniela, I just ordered your CD and hope it makes you smile whereever you are right now ...
