bertrand Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 I came across this whilst looking for MP3s to get with the freebie that sonnymax kindly hipped us too. So Joe Chambers and Tyrone Washington are on some of the tracks, but which? Did they record any other albums with Stadler? Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 Time to buy a discography. Quote
JSngry Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 (edited) Retrospection is a compilation of previously issued tracks, iirc. Tyrone is on these two albums, originally. Edited November 26, 2011 by JSngry Quote
JohnS Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 That's one I'd like to hear. Not come across it before. I have the tribute to Monk and Bird, intriguing lineup with Thad Jones and George Lewis, Quote
marcello Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 I have it, but have not listened to it in decades. That should tell you something. Quote

alankin Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 (edited) Just noticed this thread. "Retrospection" is only partly a compilation Some of the tracks are actually alternate takes and several are previously unreleased. The most notable new piece the almost 30 minute long "Clusterity" (written 1966, recorded 1974) with The Big band of the North German Radio Station conducted by Dieter Glawischnig. Good work from soloists Manfred Schoof, Albert Mangelsdorff, Gerd Dudek, Wolfgang Dauner, Lucas Lindhoolm & Tony Inzalaco. Edited May 23, 2016 by alankin Quote
Clunky Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 Brains on Fire is pretty good and ahead of the Bird/Monk tribute which I too haven't played in an age Quote

JSngry Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 Poor Heiner... I think his work is the perfect argument for not selling things you never listen to - because when you finally do, you'll be glad you still have it. I mean, it is definitely quirky as far as "how does this fit into....ANYTHING?", but those players...If you like Cowell's Brilliant Corners, think of Brains On Fire as it's socially awkward cousin, have a little love and see what's inside the kid. Rooster_Ties Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 (edited) Another possible touchstone - several tracks from Brains on Fire are more than just a little Trainwreck-esque (and more so than even Natural Essence). Edited May 24, 2016 by Rooster_Ties Quote

I like them both OK, though I'm not running to go pull them out and listen to them. I DO run to go listen to Natural Essence at times, especially Joe Chambers' work on it. Quote
