Jordu

No idea what Duke Jordan was thinking about when he composed the tune (back in 1953, I think). The original title of that composition was Minor Encamp. He recorded this for the first time - under its original title- in January 1954 in New York. The session was produced for the French label Swing.

Thought you might like to know that I have written a lyric line to the exact melody of Jordu (saalikjazz's comment in the organissimo jazz forum, which I only just discovered).

In places it's a bit tricky to sing - the sixteenth-note triplets above all - but the words do precisely fit the melody (the word 'individual' has to be regarded as four syllables: in-di-vid-yal).

YOU WANNA PLAY A SONG THAT'S CALLED JORDU

YOU BETTER GROOVE IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT TOO

THERE'S NO USE MOANIN' THAT YOU ONCE KNEW HOW

GET IT RIGHT ON DOWN NOW

YOUNG CLIFFORD WAILED IT WHEN THE SONG WAS NEW

IF SATCH HAD KNOWN IT HE'D HAVE BLOWN IT TOO

DUKE JORDAN'S MELODY BRINGS MUSIC JOY

PLAY IT ON YOUR HORN BOY

THAT BRIDGE FLYIN' ALL AROUND HAS ITS OWN INDIVIDUAL SOUND

WITH THE BASS DOWN UPON THE GROUND AND THEN

THE NOTES SEEM TO BE THE SAME BUT THE CHORDS PLAY A LITTLE GAME

TAKIN' YOU RIGHT BACK TO THE POINT WHEN

YOU WANNA PLAY A SONG THAT'S CALLED JORDU

YOU BETTER GROOVE IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT TOO

THERE'S NO USE MOANIN' THAT YOU ONCE KNEW HOW

GET IT RIGHT ON DOWN NOW

GET IT RIGHT ON DOWN NOW

GET IT RIGHT ON DOWN NOW

JUST SING IT OUT YEAH JORDU

If anyone wants to use this (or adapt it) please feel free, but I would appreciate being informed and credited if appropriate. I've also written lyrics for 'Yardbird Suite', 'Donna Lee' (yes, really!) and several alternative lyrics that will never be made public because of copyright and other (ahem) problems.

Just in case you don't know the album, one of the best lyric lines written to a jazz solo is Med Flory's version of the Parker solo on 'Ko Ko' (Supersax and L.A. Voices album). Mind-blowing!
