For a research project I have undertaken, I am scooping up all the Left Bank Jazz Society CDs I can find.

I just got the Dexter Gordon LTD. Great music, but the reissue label is actually the ZYX arm of Fantasy, which I did not realize when I ordered it.

The reproduction of the cover art is poorly done - the song titles are all blurry, and the back cover almost looks like a xerox copy. Could this be a CD-R? I didn't think ZYX pressings were CDRs. Or is the US pressing just as sloppy?

Also, is this one of Bobby Timmons' last recordings?

Thanks,

Bertrand.

OI have a US Fantasy copy and it looks fine. Sharp pics, everything clear.

Also 'XXL' by Dex comes from the same session.

Nearly. He made one track in Norwalk in November 1971, with Sonny Red, Sam Jones & Mickey Roker, issued on an album called 'Jazz at the Lyman's'. Lord's discography says this has no label or catalogue number. I don't know who else was on the album.

I have an album with that exact personnel called Live At The Connecticut Jazz Party (Chiaroscuro CR 2030). Released in 1981. Might this be that?

If so, it's available on CD: http://www.amazon.com/Live-The-Connecticut-Jazz-Party/dp/B00005QSRN

Ok, this is not that. This is this: http://www.popsike.com/Jazz-At-The-Lymans-private-pressing-Lp-Zoot-Sims-etc/250752661304.html

This is an original private pressing of the Lp "Jazz At The Lyman's". It includes 3 tracks of Ray Lyman's collection of tapes recorded at parties at his house. Cuts are "Cute" from 1970 with Hank Jones, Elvin Jones, Milt Hinton, Zoot Sims and Clark Terry, "Bags Groove" from 1971 with Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones, Micky Roker and Sonny Redd and "Lover Man" from 1967 with Coleman Hawkins, Barry Harris, Eddie Locke and Major Holly. The sound quality is excellent. The record is in near mint minus and the cover VG++ condition, clean, but with a 9cm taped split in the top seam.

I'd wager that they're all from the same source, though, that LP & this private pressing.

Yes, that's the one listed in the discography. But it gives Nov '71 as the dat, whereas the Chiaroscuro LP is from 1969, I think, though there's no date on the LP.

Just wondering how "definite" either 1971 and/or "circa late 1960s" are, as well as the odds that that exact band plays two different parties several years apart, given the "circumstances" of some of the players...

Not impossible, but...

The several ZYX-issued CDs I bought a few years ago all sounded like crap. They weren't CDrs, just crap.

Funny, I've got loads and they don't sound any different to me from other Fantasy stuff. I have one or two that I've also got on other editions...

I believe it were the ZYX 20 bit remasters of OJC material in digipaks that could sound very bad. The standard jewel case editions were the same as the US OJC:s, which are mostly quite decent.

Oh, I only have a very few of those: 3 I think - Ammons' 'Boss tenor'; Carter's 'Jazz giant'; and Wes' 'Incredible jazz guitar'. They all sound fine to me. The Ammons doesn't sound too different from the Ace LP.

Yep, those 20-bit OJC remasters in digipaks from ZYX sounded atrocious, without exception. I bought most of the available ones in one go (which is never a good idea, to be honest) many years ago and was appalled when I listened to them. Avoid at all cost. Most of the regular non-20-bit ZYX OJCs in standard jewel cases were indeed OK.
