Chuck Nessa Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 ORIGINAL COPY OF J.R. Monterose in action +the Joe Abodeely trio Studio 4 high fidelity jazz series , made in Studio 4 Records, P.O. Box 814, Rock Island, Illinois US 1964 , SS100, original press , SUPER RARE , Limited copies pressed. Etchings are SIDE 1 XCTV 97116 1 A SIDE 2 XCTV 97117 1 A Can't figure out whether the original was a deep groove pressing or not. No mention of that tidbit in any archived auctions. I hate the "deep groove" qualification. Depends on the plant and the press used in that plant. Silly shit. Quote

Yes, that's a description of my copy. So, does that mean it IS an original copy then? I wonder what it's worth. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 I dimly remember seeing one or two rare eBay auctions of originals of "In Action" at the time I bought my facsimile reissue (about 10 years ago), and they fetched steep prices (several hundred $). Quote
etherbored Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 the most recent copy on ebay went for $2,200, head man. you do the conversion to sterling. it's a highly sought after record. Quote

etherbored Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 looks like it closed last month; http://snipurl.com/2724y11 Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 The $102 LP was a VSOP pressing, I believe. Quote
B. Clugston Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 I'm no "expert" but recently played the Xanadu and the original and I prefer the Xanadu. There was some discussion as to whether the Xanadu is a needle drop or not in this thread: A question to the experts re- "The Message": How does the Xanadu vinyl reissue (Xanadu 126) hold up soundwise compared to the original or other reissues? I have no intention of forsaking my vinyl (it sounds quite decent to me) but am just curious .. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 We should point out Clugston's post is about 'The Message'. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 Originals of In Action regularly sell for $1500-$2000 in good nick. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 (edited) 250 copies only? Wow - nice find, head man ! Can't be many of those copies in the UK. Edited May 17, 2013 by sidewinder Quote
Head Man Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 I sold off the majority of my vinyl collection about ten years ago and so I was wondering why I'd hung on to this particular J. R. Monterose album. Having checked it again this morning I see that there is a deep scratch across the second track on side one. Damn! So...I've cancelled my cruise to the West Indies. Quote

etherbored Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 i'd wager even with said scratch you'd still land a handsome sum. Quote
Head Man Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 i'd wager even with said scratch you'd still land a handsome sum. Who buys vinyl with scratches on it, I wonder? Anyway thanks, I might put it up on ebay and see what the response is like Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 Is the scratch audible? If it isn't, you could add that as a "play grade" and probably get more money for it. Quote

etherbored Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 when is a 'deep scratch' not audible...? but i'm will cliff - this record would sell for over a grand easily if the scratch isn't visually hideous and the setup is otherwise a VG. jacket condition would therefore become an imporant factor. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 18, 2013 Report Posted May 18, 2013 (edited) Just checked that price guide on the 'Jazz Collector' site and the nearest equivalent I could find was a trashed-sounding VG+/VG copy which went for (gasp) $1525 in 2010. Utter madness ! I reckon you can check in for that Antigua cruise and line up the pina coladas.. Edited May 18, 2013 by sidewinder Quote

I bought an original Beatles "White Album" at Stereo Jack's one day that had quite a few scratches, some deep, and truth be told, other than a couple of pops, played through fine. Not all scratches are audible. I've found this to be especially true for original Blue Notes. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 I had the original LP issues of both that I bought when they were first released. Sold them years ago when I switched to CDs. Currently have the Fresh sound of "The Message", and a Bainbridge copy of "In Action". Quote
