Hardbopjazz Posted February 17, 2016 Report Posted February 17, 2016 32 years ago Thelonious Monk passed away. Here's advice from Monk. "Don't play everything, or every time, let some things go by. Quote
Eric Posted February 18, 2016 Report Posted February 18, 2016 Fascinating - what is the source? Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 18, 2016 Report Posted February 18, 2016 It's Steve Lacy's handwriting. My guess is that Steve decided to document the advice Monk had given him during the short period when Lacy was a member of the Monk Quintet. My feeling is that he didn't write this at the time - that it's a later recollection. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted February 18, 2016 Report Posted February 18, 2016 Jeff is correct - isn't this reproduced in the Steve Lacy interviews book? It's not handy at the moment but I think it is.. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted February 19, 2016 Report Posted February 19, 2016 "Monk's Advice" sounds like the title of a Columbia-era tune! Quote
JSngry Posted February 19, 2016 Report Posted February 19, 2016 Or a really bad Anthony Hopkins movie. Quote

mikeweil Posted February 20, 2016 Report Posted February 20, 2016 They took one line, "Always Know", for titling the first Columbia Twofer LP release of vault material in the 1980's - wise choice. Monk always knew. Quote
