ghost of miles Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 We've had a number of threads before, here & there, along the lines of, "What standard do you not want to hear for another five years?" My question today is, "What standard do you not get sick of--what standard do you like hearing frequently?" If any? For me, "Yesterdays" seems to bear the test of repeated interpretation... Quote
catesta Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 (edited) Tenderly. What can I say, I love the song. Sarah singin' it, Duke, Pops, Bill Evans, Phineas, Oscar Peterson, playin' it, good stuff. Edited February 26, 2004 by catesta Quote

ghost of miles Posted February 26, 2004 Author Report Posted February 26, 2004 "I Can't get Started." Actually, while on this subject, I like Burt Bacharac standards on jazz. I've been meaning to pick up the Stan Getz album of Bacharach tunes from BMG. (WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW is the title, I think.) Autumn Leaves and On Green Dolphin Street are standards that I, too, don't really tire of... same for a couple of Hoagy tunes, Skylark and The Nearness of You (Mehldau does a nice version on his new record). Free For All Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Alone Together - nice 14 bar phrases to start out, fun changes to blow over, many different types of grooves work (12/8, 4/4). Funny, many of these same titles were on the "I Hate" thread. wHaT a NuTtY wOrLd! Quote

You can't say that about Lee Morgan's version on "The Gigolo". I think it is the best version of that tune erver recorded, at least in my opinion. Quote
Joe G Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 I never get sick of Tenderly. Old Folks is one of my favorites as well. I don't think I've ever heard a bad version of it. Quote

Larry Kart Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 I'll second "Alone Together" and add "What Is This Thing Called Love" and "Body and Soul." Also, perhaps because it's not played all that much and because I've just become enamored of a superb version of it by Don Friedman, "I Concentrate On You." Friedman's in great form, but everything he plays is in and on the tune. It's on the album "Waltz for Debby" (a tune I can't stand). Quote

I fell in love with that tune after hearing that awful trumpet player Miles Davis play it on the Someday My Prince Will Come session. It's currently my favorite ballad to call on gigs. Actually lately I should say on "gig". Quote

That's another cd that has been sitting in my collection forever and I haven't listened to it yet. Thanks for the prompt! Quote

Not sure how that follows from the Clifford Brown comment, plus "The Gigolo" is not a standard, and has not been recorded by many artists, afaik. Are you thinking of "Just a gigolo"? Quote
