ejp626 Posted January 25 Report Posted January 25 (edited) On Sat. I saw a late Naruse film called Daughters, Wives and a Mother, which I thought was very interesting. Today I managed to get out (between shifts of shovelling snow) and saw One Battle After Another. I didn't care for this at all, for multiple reasons, which I'd rather not get into now. Assuming the city is moving and not shut down, I'm planning on seeing Belle du Jour on Tues. TIFF is hosting a Bunuel retrospective, in Jan/Feb, though this screening isn't part of it. I'll see about getting to a few of them, but TIFF actually makes it quite hard for non-members to get tickets to the classics. And planning seeing Galaxy Quest on Wed, which will be fun! But he did not have anywhere near as big a role in "Straight No Chaser" than in "Bird," that was the only point I was trying to make. Right now This disc is too short, because it’s so wonderful and should be so much longer! Mario Adnet “Para Gershwin e Jobim” Quote

Holy Ghost Posted January 26 Report Posted January 26 Late night TMC ( I have a hard time falling asleep) has introduced me to a number of movies from the seventies I never even knew existed, eg, this one, starring Harvey Keitel and Robert DeNiro. Don't follow what the big problem was, except a small debt that wasn't paid and two hours was "paid" explaining that, and a loophole ending, but otherwise, an under-the-radar movie I never heard of beforehand. Dub Modal Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 Michael Douglas and the late Brittany Murphy star in this one along with Famke Jansson, Sean Bean, and Jennifer Esposito. It's got a gritty NYC feel to it, especially in the intro which is supposed to have taken place in 1991. Some great elements but it's also got its share of cheese. The MacGuffin could have been much better. Regardless, I'd rewatch it. Kind of a forgotten movie at this point for whatever reason. Quote

ejp626 Posted January 31 Report Posted January 31 Saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood last night. In 70 mm! I liked it quite a bit with a few reservations along the way, as is kind of par for the course with Q. I thought his portrayal of Bruce Lee was absurd and quite offensive, and it wasn't required to serve the storyline. Quote

Contemporaneous reviews were mixed, focusing on the Hitchcockian parodies. But damn, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Norman, Howie Morris, Ron Glass...virtuosos all, and all in their most top form. Kahn in particular...in a zone... Plus the best Sinatra spoof ever? https://youtu.be/heLBlQgMfo8?si=4r7RUvfMeS-tIg9d Quote
JSngry Posted February 3 Author Report Posted February 3 Never realized how much of a looker a young Joan Crawford was, even in a Salvation Army uniform, as she is much of the time here. Quote
