I don't have the space either. I'm downsizing slowly, and in the case of these discs it's a program of attrition, I sell another version I have of these when I get the new version. Sigh. It's not easy, it is getting easier. Quote
JSngry Posted December 6, 2019 Author Report Posted December 6, 2019 The 2018 debut album of a seemingly wonderful quartet playing a program of 21st Century compositions by living American composers (all born between 1977 - 1991), all commissioned for the group and developed in personal collaborations between the composers and the band. It lives! Caroline Shaw's work (a reductive fantasy - my term, not hers - on Beethoven Op.18 No. 6) is short, but intriguing, as has been most of her work which I have heard. Add her to my list of living people to pay attention to! Here's the band playing the piece live: Quote

Gheorghe Posted December 7, 2019 Report Posted December 7, 2019 First I heard the wonderful ballad album of Trane with Johnny Hartman, and then, thinking about "Village Vanguard Again" (Trane with Pharoah) I decided to spin only Pharoah. Quote

Joe Posted December 7, 2019 Report Posted December 7, 2019 Sounds surprisingly like late 90s Stereolab at time (if you will pardon that anachronism). Quote

duaneiac Posted December 7, 2019 Report Posted December 7, 2019 A good compilation disc which succeeds on two fronts: it introduced me to some new music/musicians way back when and it still holds up today as simply an enjoyable listening experience. The MJQ + Almeida track sounds just about how you might expect, and to me, that's delightful. The Hank Crawford track might not have been my first choice as a representative example of his work (the strings here are pretty syrupy), but that's okay. Clarence Wheeler & The Enforcers? I still don't know who they were and the sample of their music here is a groovy flashback to 1970, but ultimately forgettable. Joe Zawinul is always some one I tell myself, "I gotta look into his music more one day", but that day has never really come for me. I'm kind of surprised there is no Coltrane or Herbie Mann here. Granted, they were both included on Vol. 1 (as were most of the musicians on this disc), but they were probably the two most important record sellers on the Atlantic roster and that alone would seem to have merited inclusion here.
