Ken Dryden Posted December 20, 2019 Report Posted December 20, 2019 I finally pulled the trigger and shelled out a hefty amount for this long out of print 10 CD set. Quote

I'm not sure what the consensus is among jimmy Smith fans, but I really like this album. It's a Creed Taylor production, so there are big band sides along with three trio tracks. This CD reissue adds 2 bonus tracks: "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Wes Montgomery and "Greensleeves" with Kenny Burrell. It's all very festive and swinging music. Now playing: Any one who is a fan of post-swing era big bands would be well advised to pick up any CD you may find from any of the US military service bands. I've never been disappointed by any of the ones I have listened to. They all have some creative arrangements and many excellent musicians. On this disc, they even manage a listenable version of "Little Drummer Boy". I cannot help but mention that the band manager is listed as CMSgt Dudley Hinote, who ironically, plays bass trombone. Regrettably the probability that she will perform in Germany is very small. IMO Ravishing singer and musician. There are a few voices I fell in love with  this year- - be it  roots or classical music. Hers belongs to them. Quote
sidewinder Posted December 20, 2019 Report Posted December 20, 2019 (edited) Conn version - already sounding very good indeed so the Mosaic should be a revelation, perhaps. Maybe a bit grainy but I suspect that is the recording. Edited December 20, 2019 by sidewinder Quote
Peter Friedman Posted December 20, 2019 Report Posted December 20, 2019 Both Bud Powell and Don Byas at the top of their game. Highly recommended! Quote
Justin V Posted December 20, 2019 Report Posted December 20, 2019 Pres' last session. The liner notes prepared me for the worst and I can't say I agree with the negativity. Early, late or in-between, Pres is Pres. The band is top-notch. I can't remember from the liners, but was the underrated Jamil Nasser living in Europe at the time?  Quote

soulpope Posted December 20, 2019 Report Posted December 20, 2019 THe title track being a superlative homage to bassist George Tucker (who died two weeks earlier to the recording session) .... Quote
