1944-1945

Thanks largely to members of this forum, I have been listening to a good deal of James P. Johnson.  I am particularly taken with The New York Jazz session on here.  Edit:  I posted the wrong cover-should have been the 1944 James P. Johnson Classics.

Rollins, Sonny - Sonny Rollins & The Big Brass - Amazon.com Music

This was the record that introduced me to the great Belgian guitarist Rene Thomas.

I made a mistaken claim.

Steve Coleman & Five Elements - World Expansion (JMT/Winter & Winter, 1987)
I have the Winter & Winter reissue, but those covers are dull and repetitious -- so I'm sticking with the JMT image.  Plus, the original cover does a much better job of conveying the late-80s vibe in the music.

Dexter Gordon Quartet - Willisau 1978 - Amazon.com Music

Is this as good as one would expect it to be, Ed?

Oh yes, it is.  I literally got home early from work today, and it was in my mailbox.  So I'm not quite through my first listen - currently on track 4 of 5.  Dex is in fine form and the sound is excellent, but my standards are not as high as some on the board.  Sounds like you're right there hearing it live.

Of course this is the viewpoint of a card carrying Dexter fan.
