Next up, one of my all-time favorites:

Richard "Groove" Holmes - Onsaya Joy (Flying Dutchman, 1975)

Soooooo good -- especially that title cut.

If you wanna give it a listen... :

I always loved this cover but never really grasped why. Clearly Jones and Montoliu are looking at the wrong cameras, whereas Johnson's creasing up over something Montoliu muttered.

I’ll ask my friend Jordi Suñol. He took the picture. By the way, you mean Alvin Queen, right? (no Jones in the lineup).

Gosh. You're right. I had misread it as "Elvin" and never checked.

Wonderful new CD which has an assortment of tracks recorded between 1968 and 1989.   Most of the selections find Ms. Dearie in a trio setting, but on 5 of the selections she is backed by the Metropole Orchestra.  Love her version of "Both Sides Now".

Not at all "avant-garde", just forward looking inside playing. Tenorist Barrett Friedman (still very active,, btw, I got durious and looked in Google) catches my ear as somebody who appears to have, intentionally or not, found a personal variation on Booker Ervin. I like that, and all in all I like this record
