JSngry Posted April 25, 2022 Author Report Posted April 25, 2022 I like how Rob Brown digs in and has the skills to keep digging. And is Warren Smith still going strong? He is, right? almost 82! Quote
Rabshakeh Posted April 25, 2022 Report Posted April 25, 2022 Ben Webster, Buck Clayton And The Henri Chaix Quartet – Ben And Buck (Sackville, 1967) Nice one from Switzerland. 1 hour ago, JSngry said: I like how Rob Brown digs in and has the skills to keep digging. JSngry Posted April 25, 2022 Author Report Posted April 25, 2022 He's got a lot of records, but I don't really "follow" him. The three I've put up here are really good, though, especially the record with Roy Campbell, William Parker, and Hamid. That thing is HOT. Quote

JSngry Posted April 25, 2022 Author Report Posted April 25, 2022 Yeah, he's on plenty of prime William Parker records too. That's a good one. Quote
mjazzg Posted April 25, 2022 Report Posted April 25, 2022 This was my first exposure to Rob Brown and I still rate it But his recordings with William Parker aren't to be missed and O'Neal's Porch is a standout amongst them, I agree Quote

I believe I was exposed to him through William's music or that of Matt Shipp, back in the late 90s. Saw a duo with Juan Pablo Carletti (d) several years ago that was truly incredible, very much in the direction of Lyons but with a highly individual and razor sharp language all his own. Also, there was a great Whit Dickey band with Rob, Karen Borca, Michael Bisio, and Jackson Krall that was bananas -- there is a concert on YouTube worth watching. It was intended to be released on CD but there were issues with the audio recording I guess (video/audio seems fine and it was amazing to witness live). Quote
Rabshakeh Posted April 25, 2022 Report Posted April 25, 2022 (edited) Oh cool. I do know him then. I had just assumed that he was Ari Brown. O Neal's Porch is my favourite William Parker record. Edited April 25, 2022 by Rabshakeh Quote

JSngry Posted April 25, 2022 Author Report Posted April 25, 2022 How refreshing it is to see a Blues record with liner notes - lengthy ones at that - composed by the artist themself. Also refreshing to hear the results of having a not-outstanding artist backed by jazz musicians who know how to play blues with empathy, as opposed to some stylistically indigenous players of equal or lower quality of not-outstanding-ness. Like a well-mixed drink, this one goes town smooth and repetition works in its favor. Oh, btw - Curtis Amy is RIGHT on this record. right in every way. Quote

Kyoto Jazz Massive actually popped up in the continued play algorithm once that Of All the Things record played through and I dug that sound too. United Future Org will be checked out as well.
