jazzbo Posted September 16, 2022 Report Posted September 16, 2022 Right now. . . as far as Brazilian jazz this has it all. All it is missing is somehow Tom Jobim beaming down from the cosmos to contribute. Duduka Da Fonseca, Helio Alves, featuring Maucha Adnet "Samba Jazz and Jobim" Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted September 16, 2022 Report Posted September 16, 2022 Now playing Bob Kaufman - Dreaming Out Loud (Whaling City Sound). Berklee professor Kaufman on drums. Berklee professor Bruce Gertz on bass. Local tenor master Jerry Bergonzi on tenor. This is a very good trio date that would likely slide by most people as the leader and bassist are less know outside the Boston area. Funny thing is, even though I have seen Kaufman & Gertz on the bandstand many times, I still bought this because Bergonzi was in the tenor chair. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted September 16, 2022 Report Posted September 16, 2022 (edited) Charlie Parker Big Band – Charlie Parker Big Band (Clef, 1954) Duke Ellington And His Orchestra – Ellington Indigos (Columbia, 1958) Listening to this one because of a mention on the recent thread about the first jazz albums people bought. It gets a bad rap for some reason, and I'd never listened to it as a result. But I really like it. I accept that none of these is the best version of these tunes, but it has a unified feel, great sound, and a nice simple one-soloist-per-song concept. I can see why it was a hit: If I was a stern 1950s father, I would have bought it too. Johnny Hodges is great on it. 5 hours ago, BillF said: Love this one. Something about the treatment really brings out the familial link between scotch/Irish folk and the blues, really strongly. Edited September 16, 2022 by Rabshakeh Quote

The universally trusted Allmusic is one (never great, but normally good for Ellington at least). A few other places. It seems really good to me. It might even be the Ellington I'd recommend to a casual beginner. Quote
JSngry Posted September 16, 2022 Author Report Posted September 16, 2022 I guess those people read the liner notes instead of listening to the record. Oh wait, yeah, the first CD issue of it was jacked up, not at all the original record except in partial part. THAT version should be panned, just because. But the OG record itself, I will go to the mat for THAT one. Quote

I think Gertz still has a bunch of sealed copies in his closet. I was able to buy a few from him years ago. He had these back then: Con Brio - Con Brio (Not Fat Records 01-22) Gonz - Uranian Undertow (Not Fat Records 02-22) Jerry Bergonzi Quartet - Featuring Bruce Gertz (Not Fat Records 03-22) Con Brio - The Ray (Not Fat Records 04-22) Gonz - Caught in the Act! (Not Fat Records 06-22) There was another one by Gonz called "The Front End", which Gertz also had, but I had found a copy of that at Stereo Jack's years before. That band, Gonz, was a great trio with Gertz & the late Bob Gullotti backing Jerry. I wish I had gotten a chance to see them live. Quote

jazzbo Posted September 16, 2022 Report Posted September 16, 2022 (edited) John Coltrane "Blue Train--the Complete Masters" Blue Note Japan SHM-SACD This Japanese SHM-SACD sound pretty darned good. What might set it apart from a number of other issues is the stereo separation and the depth of the soundfield. Edited September 16, 2022 by jazzbo Quote
