Kevin Bresnahan Posted September 13, 2023 Report Posted September 13, 2023 I'm spinning Joanne Brackeen's "Ancient Dynasty" (Columbia) again. This is such a great date and it's a shame that no one has seen fit to release this digitally. If only Mosaic was still doing their "singles". Quote

This one has the bonus of some fairly frisky Joe Henderson! It's not really Columbia, though, it was Tappan Zee, Bob James' imprint. What factor that has been in the non-reissuance, I do not know. jazzbo Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 Starting off on disc 1 of this one, as disc 2 was still in the player from last evening. This year’s SFJazz Collective had a funkier yet still swinging vibe. Their “original compositions” are fun to listen to as are their Jackson interpretations. I think I know him only as Monk´s bassist and can say, that all bassists who worked with Monk were fantastic. The swung hard and had more percussive sounds, more heavy pluckin´, not that long "doom doom doom doom" you hear when bassists have their strings really down. I like the percussive effect of the bass very much, but what do I say, I love everything that´s percussive, drums, Monk´s piano, strong bass players like Malik, like McKibbon, Larry Gales, Butch Warren and who they all was..... jazzbo Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 Something different. . . . Each of the soloists is expertly framed by the arranger. Duke Ellington’s Spacemen “The Cosmic Scene” Columbia mono LP Quote

He made a few records. They combine North African influences with hard bop, but much more hard bop. Good, catchy records. I recommend them. Quote

Rabshakeh Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 (edited) I never really connected with Previte. A little too rocky and stiff. Anthony Braxton – Nine Compositions (Hill) 2000 This one is really excellent. Nice to hear Braxton with actual arrangements. A good recommendation from @mjazzg, for which thanks!
