Stan Kenton “The Complete Capitol Studio Recordings Of Stan Kenton 1943-1947” Mosaic Records 7 cd box set, disc 2

There is some great music in this set, I pulled it out of the darkness of the back of a set of shelves and haven’t listened to it for quite some time. Sound is fantastic for its time–Capitol can be relied on for that. As can Mosaic.

Another Helen Merrill album I have not listened to in a long while. Steve Lacy makes this interesting. If there IS a typical Helen Merrill album, this is not it.

“Jelena Ana Milčetić a.k.a Helen Merrill” Gitanes cd

It's telling, that Helen Merrill felt ready going back to her roots @ Croatia only at this point of career (the following album "Lilac Wine" should be her last) .... Steve Lacy never disappoints, but the album concept as a whole is touching ....

Well. . . I wonder if this record could have been made earlier in her career. Luckily, it was made right before her last.

We just can guess, but for sure her "2nd career" with EmArcy/Gitanes/Verve granted her additional opportunities ....

First listen to what I assumed would be a Bandcamp friendly 2022 release. Turns out it is from the late 1970s and is the most Gilles Peterson release imaginable. Good fun.

I liked it quite a lot. The two horn players fit well together and were supported by a fine rhythm section of Renee Rosnes, Martin Wind and Mat Wilson.

Now playing:

I'm not sure that I don't prefer this outtakes record to the actual Trumpet Summit album. Far less squealing competitiveness.
