Nice.

I didn't buy the box set, but accumulated all the titles in a few installments. New World was kind enough to comp me (unasked) with a copy of the booklet in one (large) order. :tup

Wolf Eyes & Anthony Braxton – Live At Pioneer Works, 26 October 2023

Their first collaboration was obviously a big fun piece of news but this is really far more substantial as music.

Something like a dozen years ago, I bought and watched this film on Butch Morris called "Black February" and between his self-important attitude coupled with his boorish interactions with his musicians (some other things too), I was so turned off by him, that I just completely stopped listening to him.

Thanks. I'll look for video of that.  I started listening to those conductions only a few years ago, and the background info on Morris I dug up (at the time) was positive. OTOH, I've heard many unsavory anecdotes about d**kish conductors and composers in the classical realm, so nothing would surprise me.

I've only picked up 5 of the CDs, ones that were for sale cheap at Berkshire. I like them. The notion of "conduction" certainly leaves open the possibility of fraudulence, but I don't get that here. There's a true sense of underlying form in the service of the spontaneity (or is it the other way around?).

I think I've seen the same piece as Rod, and yeah, comes of as a bit pompous. But oh well. I'm playing his records, not renting him a spare bedroom.

True, that. Before purchasing any Morris, I heard the "Treasure Box" (though not in that format) recordings of Alan Silva's HR 57 material and thought the results merited more listening.

I currently attend monthly concerts of the Creative Improvisers Orchestra (founded by the late Karl Berger), and they AFAICT in effect involve conduction (almost always by Peter Apfelbaum). Everyone appears to get along, and I like the results.

I really enjoyed it. Much better playing from Shepp than on his other late period records. The band is great and lots of variety.

A very interesting duet session by two masters. Vitchev is new to me, Iago has been a favorite for a while.

This is a nice volume in the series with some live material in better sound than I have elsewhere. I’m hoping one day to find and buy Volumes 16 and 17.

Yess, quite. But if I have one criticism, it's that the endings too often seem arbitrary and maybe too long in coming.
