HutchFan
Bobby Watson & Horizon - The Inventor (Blue Note, 1990) IMO, Watson's music has an irresistible, swaggering charisma about it.

Fond memories of seeing that band, playing some of that album too. ‘Post Motown Bop’ another really good one.

Nice! I've never seen Watson perform. Hope to rectify that some day. re: Post Motown Bop -- I love that record too. It might even be my "desert-island pick" for Watson. jazzbo
Dunno, haven't found any specific info nor do I know if he recorded more with the WDR. Perhaps he was touring with an American band and Carmen pegged him for that chair? Edited November 7, 2022 by jazzbo
HutchFan
Next up: Rod Williams - Hanging in the Balance (Muse, 1989) I dig this. Rod Williams' compositions are interesting, and the Marty Ehrlich - Graham Haynes front line sounds really good.

I'd have liked to have seen where he'd have gone had he not been so linked with Marsalis / JatLC. From the post fame end of Marsalis' career when, to my ears, he sometimes seemed to be doing pedagogical reenactment rather than playing anything "true", Gordon always stuck out as the guy who was a bit more real within the retro setting than anyone else. Perhaps I am talking drivel. Anyway, how is this one? Edited November 7, 2022 by Rabshakeh

My copy is beat to hell around the edges because I’ve carried it to work so often in a bag. Same with the Monk Blue Note set that came out around the same time.
