I have ONE Peterson Album from the MPS period "In Tune" with the Singers Unlimited and it also has George Mraz on bass. George Mraz + Ray Price .... Quote
Justin V Posted December 19, 2019 Report Posted December 19, 2019 (edited) Disc 6: The liner notes can be pretty negative, but I haven't heard the wheels come off yet in Pres' playing while going through this set. I am fearing the worst when i get to the last session but i am looking forward to listening to the interviews. Pres and Peterson worked and I have a Sweets tooth. I don't think I've heard Lou Stein before but I am enjoying his playing. Edited December 19, 2019 by Justin V Quote
HutchFan Posted December 19, 2019 Report Posted December 19, 2019 JoeHen plays magnificently here, and he's supported by a dream rhythm section in Larry Willis, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette. Quote

duaneiac Posted December 19, 2019 Report Posted December 19, 2019 In the liner notes, there is a photo of a Chiaroscuro Records EP CR-1975 A/B. The A side has two Christmas tunes by Joe Venuti & Zoot Sims ("Good King Wenceslaus" & "White Christmas"). The B side has three tunes by Earl Hines ("The Christmas Song", "Jingle Bells" and "White Christmas"). Of these, only Earl Hines' performance of "White Christmas" is included on this disc. Would any one here know where to find/hear those other tracks? Have they ever been reissued outside of that original EP? I would love to hear all of them. I am among that likely very small sliver on the Venn Diagram of people who Earl Hines, Christmas songs and yet Christmas. Quote

HutchFan Posted December 19, 2019 Report Posted December 19, 2019 The Best of Tito Puente: El Rey del Timbal! (Rhino) A fun compilation -- even it's impossible to summarize Puente's "best" in just one disc. Quote
Justin V Posted December 19, 2019 Report Posted December 19, 2019 Hans Teuber - Lucky: A nice, Latin-inflected date from multi-reedist Teuber. I think it is his only date as the sole leader, which is a shame. It also has the underappreciated Santi Debriano. Quote

jazzbo Posted December 19, 2019 Report Posted December 19, 2019 Now on to Hank Mobley "Thinking of Home" on Blue Note Japan cd. I really like the compositions on this one. There were as many great Mobley albums held back from release during this time period as were released. Quote

jazzbo Posted December 19, 2019 Report Posted December 19, 2019 (edited) On to Hank Mobley "Slice of the Top" Blue Note Japan cd. I especially dig that they cover "There's a Lull in my Life" which I always enjoy hearing Ivie Anderson sing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, recorded decades earlier. Nice arrangement by Duke Pearson. Edited December 19, 2019 by jazzbo Quote
