Now on to a 2 cd set i bought to hear Mark Turner, Jason Palmer, "The Concert: 12 Musings for Isabella" I found a copy of this on discogs and I do like Palmer & Turner so I ordered it. Looking forward to seeing these two again in the future. Palmer used to perform pretty regularly around my area pre-COVID so I'm hoping he's still around. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 31, 2021 Report Posted March 31, 2021 (edited) Ben Thomas "The Madman's Difference" Origin Records cd I bought this because of the presence of Jovino Santos Neto who I admire very much, and I'm glad that I went for it. Following Neto has always proven beneficial. Edited March 31, 2021 by jazzbo Quote

Can't sit still with this one. jazzbo -- I'm familiar with Jovino Santos Neto's playing from his work with Hermeto. But I don't think I've heard any of his solo records. Would this CD be a good place to begin exploring his music as a leader? Do you have any particular favorites? I'm now listening to more music from Klaus Ignatzek: Klaus Ignatzek Group - Jacaranda (Timeless, 1988) Even though there are two Brazilian musicians in this group -- and album shares the same title as Luiz Bonfá's classic record -- this music is (mostly) "straight-ahead" jazz. ... That said, I think Claudio Roditi sounds good in just about any context. ... It's still odd that Roditi is not with us any more. Quote

This one is rather samba centric, which is not always the case with Neto. I really love these perhaps my favorites. . . any would be a good entry point: Quote

It didn't quite make the cut -- but I agree with you. It's surprisingly good. Quote

Not really "surprisingly"...Maynard always had excellent bands, didn't always make excellent records though...then again, I came of age in such a way that I knew the older Maynard records before the whole "MF HORN thing got out of control and the shitshow took over. If that's how you came to know Maynard, then, yeah, finding out that he made records like THIS would be a surprise! But I heard more or less that same band live around that time, and, yeah, this was how they played live. Fun! I have a good number of pre-MF HORN Columbia records and don't shy away from them....Color Him Wild on Mainstream is particularly wonderful. Check it out if you don't know it. Quote
