I like the extra space for the solos. I agree. I didn't know anything about it but apple music has a decent write-up summary on it (these aren't included with all albums on this platform, so it's nice when one's available). NP. This one escaped me but am listening now after seeing it upthread. Quote
Larry Kart Posted January 25, 2022 Report Posted January 25, 2022 Mosaic Tristano set, trio recordings. The last several with Ind and Alan Levitt are out of sight. Quote

Gheorghe Posted January 25, 2022 Report Posted January 25, 2022 I saw Blakey live on many occasions. I think the last one was shortly after this record was made. I think in spring 1989, in any case Javon Jackson was on tenor and Benny Green on piano. I was sittin in the first row and could enjoy Blakey´s fantastic drum sound, I like to hear them cymbals and snares very clearly. But on the album it seems they had put the drum on a very low level because I can´t hear THE powerful Blakey sound. Is this due to the way they underrecorded his drums ? Quote

Wonderful recording. Would like to have more Harold Land recordings. Great artist. 17 hours ago, soulpope said: Are these previously 'unissued" recordings or is it only another compilation? Thanks Quote

jazzbo Posted January 25, 2022 Report Posted January 25, 2022 I still have my LP of this session which I bought when it was still fairly a new release, but this SHM-SACD is free from decades of wear and sounds very nice (I think it sounds right with my DAC in "Out" phase). Just such great music. This is where I heard Flora Purim and said "Wow" and followed her everywhere in that decade. Such a killer release. . .important in my listening life. Chick Corea "Return to Forever" ECM-Universal Japan SHM-SACD Quote
JSngry Posted January 25, 2022 Author Report Posted January 25, 2022 There's a line between too much and just right, and it fascinates me how nobody here seems to care on which side they're on at any given time. Suffice it to say that when the trifecta of Hampton/Sebesky/Maiden got busy on both sides of the paper, a bit more attention to that got paid and that's why the Roulette set (and the Cameo & Mainstream records that followed). But this one here in not unlistenable at all, far from it. It's just a bit...splattery in terms of dynamics. Some good soloing, too! Quote
jazzbo Posted January 25, 2022 Report Posted January 25, 2022 Starting off where I left off on this disc a few days ago with the Memphis Horns segment. Dub Modal Posted January 25, 2022 Report Posted January 25, 2022 Aware of Perelman but never listened to an album. This one is from January 2021. I dig his sound. There's a lot going on here and a lot to like. Quote

He brings a lot to the table here. It just seems more focused & compositional to me than the few others I've tried. Could be Shipp's influence. Not sure. He's done others with Shipp, but this one just resonated more with me. Edited January 25, 2022 by jlhoots Quote
