dougcrates Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 The cover of the actual Tone Poet is much darker than the image I copied from the Blue Note site. Disappointing that they couldn't recreate the original which really popped. Regardless, a classic session. Quote
Stompin at the Savoy Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 (edited) I have quite a backlog of new stuff and am just getting around to this one. Listened to the first disk yesterday. I like it more than I expected to. Pretty swinging stuff. Bob Zurke! Sound is good. Edited January 29 by Stompin at the Savoy Quote

jazzbo Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 I like this one. Not released until 1995, these 1957 recordings really draw me “into” the music. A trio with Chet’s trumpet and vocals, guitar and bass. Quote
felser Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 I've been doing a concentrated Jessica Williams listen the last few days. Glorious stuff. Quote

mikeweil Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 Sound is surprisingly good. But the LP length playing time makes me wonder what their source was. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 The Orphan Newsboys “Extra!” Jazzology cd This outfit led by Marty Grosz is always a fun listen. Marty sings in a Fats Waller style better than anyone I’ve ever heard, a skill born from love. And he may not admit it but he plays a better guitar than Eddie Condon. Great stuff. 500×499 61.6 KB Marty Grosz, guitar and vocals Peter Ecklund, cornet and whistling Bobby Gordon, clarinet and singing Greg Cohen, bass Ken Peplowski, alto sax and clarinet Murray Wall, bass This may not be one of the best recordings ever but it’s so well recorded for what it is. And one wonderful aspect of this group is it takes a while before one realizes. . . there’s no drummer. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 Marty Grosz was a regular at the Atlanta Jazz Party for years, though he would get on the host's nerves by telling too many jokes at the beginning of sets he led, a problem when individual sets were maybe 25-30 minutes before the lineup changed. I guess Marty is retired now, he must be in his nineties. Quote
