Basie On Verve

JSngry

Recommended Posts

If I've got my chronology straight, Basie went from Verve to Roulette and then back to Verve, right?

So, how long was he with the label this second time, what years, and what were the albums? Also, any clue as to why? Hadn't Granz sold the label by then?

Also, did he go straight from Verve to Dot, or was there a stop in-between?

As always, thanks in advance!

No answers to your questions, but...

I WANT A BASIE VERVE BOX SET!!!

ubu

I'll second that. Michael - are you reading this?

..of if Verve does it, please spare us those fancy packaging - just let us have the good music.

If it's straight Verve, looks like only about 9 albums. In other words, doable. Are Reprise and the other labels now part of Verve/Universal. If so, that's probably not doable, unless it's just the Complete Verve Sessions.

However, in looking at Mike's list it doesn't include King of Swing, which came out as an LPR a year or so ago, or April in Paris. Perhaps there are more Verves?

Brad - the listing above only covers Basie's second run on Verve, the one after leaving Roulette. BTW - missing from that list are the two Basie/Beatles albums.

The first Basie/Verve association is usually considered the "classic" one. That would be the first priority for a Mosaic, I'd think, and I'm all in favor of it. There hasn't been one yet, has there?

No box of this type so far. Chronogical Classics is starting to issue the Basie Verve (Clef) era. They will do this their way. Wish Mosaic (or Verve?) would do this right! With the unissued items, alternates and improved sound...

Ocium has started covering the Verve New Testament band, 2 Cds so far if I remember correctly. A Verve/Mosaic box of that band including the Joe Williams sides would be fine.

Seems I overlooked a page while typing, thus the Beatles Lp was missing. I edited my post above.

Mike, I saw these Ocium discs in some store here. They look alright, compared to other european rip-off labels. Are they complete? Do they have all takes (I did not look that close, obviously...)?

A Mosaic of the first run at Verve would HAVE to include the Williams sides, they are among the best NT Basie, if you ask me!

And hey, Mosaic did the Reprise Duke, why shouldn't they give us the Reprise Basie?

That would make for three new Basie Mosaics:

- Complete Fifties Verve Basie

- Complete Reprise Basie

- Complete Sixties Verve Basie

as well as the obvious one:

- Complete Forties (and earliest fifties?) Columbia/Vocalion/Okeh Basie

(and add:

- Complete Columbia 20s-40s Ellington

for all those of us who like to dream...)

The Ocium volumes I have so far (Buck Clayton´s "Back to Buck" , Coleman Hawkins´s Hollywood sessions...) are very good: rare to find sessions in good sound, though sometimes from different eras. I don´t know if they include COMPLETE sessions (with alternates) in any of their releases, but I guess they don´t.

As far as I can see the Ocium releases cover only the master takes, but of course there might be exceptions, and they bring together rare material from obscure labels that has not been on CD so far. I have the Paul Qunichette and Bennie Green CDs and I am satisfied with them, I will get some more.

I do not know about their plans, but their catalog is expanding fast. Their website has even more discographical details:

Thanks for all the details and the Ocium link! These look like pretty solid releases!

Only I really should cut down my CD expenses... and they sell them far too expansive here (some 25 Euros they want for them!).

If you buy directly from them with a credit card, they're cheap! EUR 8,99!!! Shipping costs are reasonable, and delivery is fast. When I place an order with them I'll let you know. Shops here sell them for double their price, which is better than in Switzerland, but still pretty high.

Not to pick a nit, but the list is still lacking the Happy Tiger label Beatles Lp.

I believe you, Jim, but Bruyninckx seemingly does not have it - if you post or PM details (Title, Label and number, month and year of recording) I will edit in!

That looks like some Beatles that I could get on too.

So Organissimo could finally make us get into the Beatles... ain't this a cool place? ;)

Uh, there's some Beatles I do like: those couple of arrangements on the Ellington Reprise are quite stunning (as is the "Blowing in the Wind" there - though I have no problem in liking Dylan, not at all).

Thanks, Jim, for that Beatles album, I edited my post accordingly. I have to admit I took it for a bootleg, with that label name! Bruyninckx has it, of course, it was recorded December 15, 1969.

I'm afraid I will like the Beatles originals a little more than the Basie treatments ...
