Teasing the Korean Posted July 17, 2022 Report Posted July 17, 2022 Now enjoying this album, featuring Gauguin cover art, with brunch. The version of "Bali Hai" is especially nice. If you have the Pacific Jazz box set, you have this album, but it is of course split up between two different discs, because we are talking about Mosaic, after all. Quote
mjazzg Posted July 17, 2022 Report Posted July 17, 2022 But if you have the first UK LP you can enjoy it just as it should be. Lovely listen, may just indulge myself post dinner. Music to cool a sweltering summer day in the city. Quote

JSngry Posted July 17, 2022 Report Posted July 17, 2022 So you have to either flip the record over or swap the cds out? Quote
mjazzg Posted July 17, 2022 Report Posted July 17, 2022 How about I stream it? Will that be acceptable to everyone? 5 minutes ago, Chuck Nessa said: But the music is split up there too, beecause it's an LP. Sigh Quote
Guy Berger Posted July 17, 2022 Report Posted July 17, 2022 (edited) Yes - can be listened to on Spotify without interruptions. I’m on an older thread bashing this album… But I changed my mind, it isn’t that bad! Agreed that “Bali Hai” is good. Counter-but: unless you are an Eric Dolphy fanatic, you aren’t missing that much if you ignore Chico Hamilton records between the departure of Buddy Collette and Jim Hall, and the Charles Lloyd / Gabor Szabo incarnation of the band. Can't say I agree with this, the version of the Ellington Suite with Dolphy is exquisite. Quote

I dunno, I've never heard a Chico Hamilton record I didn't like, although my favorites are from the Gabor Szabo era. 1 hour ago, JSngry said: Gongs East! is not bad at all. I have long included the track "Far East" on my Exotica Buried Treasures compilations. Edited July 18, 2022 by Teasing the Korean Quote
mikeweil Posted July 18, 2022 Report Posted July 18, 2022 Listened to it this afternoon - nice, but not that fascinating. But I love both versions of the Ellington Suite, and especially love to hear both Horn and Collette on the originally issued LP. I don't mind changing CDs when listening to them via the Mosaic Quote

Well, sometimes "nice" is what you need to get you by. I also love the Fred Katz album played by Chico's Quintet. It is far more challenging, but I have to be in the right mood to hear it. Quote
