Late Posted October 25, 2006 Report Posted October 25, 2006 The track "Karen on Monday" from this album is just gorgeous. The bass line, curiously enough, follows most (though not all) of the vamp from "Footprints" — though Carter's composition is a ballad. Interesting touch. Quote
Late Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 If anyone here is inclined and has the resources, could you post a scan of Flight for Four? I've only seen the teeniest black-and-white scan (on eBay) that wasn't even worth saving. From what I can tell, the cover is quite artistic. I'd love to see it in all its color glory. And, to reciprocate, The Giant is Awakened, complete with gorgeous cover scan, is available here. Quote
Late Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 Aha, from afrik.com. Better than nuttin'! Is that structure in L.A.? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 Don't have a scanner at home... I think that, yes, the sculpture is in LA. I will look and see exactly what/where it is when I'm off work. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 If it is in LA, all this goes to show just how many Angelenos don't really get around the city. I grew up in the area, and I doubt I'd know too many people who'd be able to tell me where that statue is located. I met Bradford (briefly) at a free concert at LACMA with his group (Don Preston was on piano, some representation from the Carter/Bradford bands). He's a really gracious, positive guy, even in light of the sheer crappiness of LA performance opportunities. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 Well, forgot to look and I'm at school. Any opinions of Vinny Golia's Sfumato (Clean Feed), with Bradford? I like that one myself... Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 Well, forgot to look and I'm at school. Any opinions of Vinny Golia's Sfumato (Clean Feed), with Bradford? I like that one myself... I enjoy Sfumato an awful lot. Great playing all around! Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 Man, I'd love to see some kind of Dutchman Mosaic Select. Carter/Bradford, Horace Tapscott, who else? Did Arthur Blythe record for them in the early 70's? Hell Yeah. I'm a fan of Seeking, tho Dauwhe is the one that really knocks me out... Have Dauwhe on at the moment Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 That's one of my favorites by this group - adding Nate Morgan on piano and Ndugu Chancler on drums! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 (edited) Next: Nessa and Thornton go to the movies! Edited April 5, 2007 by clifford_thornton Quote
ep1str0phy Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 I've (slowly) been accumulating all the Roots and Folklore albums (thankfully, they're in decent supply out here in CA--the only one I haven't seen, in any form, is the second album). I've found it more difficult to get into the Gramavision sides than the other Bradford/Carter albums--maybe because textural wackiness is the norm, and (perhaps) a little sonic nuance is lost in the production. I can, however, "get" the technique of the compositions and improvisation, and there are fine spots for all... Still, I've had no problem getting with Comin' On, which is just a reduced ensemble featuring Roots and Folklore players. To this moment, though, I have trouble seeing why (if not how) Don Preston--an impressive player in his own right--is at all necessary in this music. Preston's knack for electronics can work some interesting magic in the proper context, but it's difficult not to hear how a piano might sound redundant in the obviously successful Bradford/Carter group dynamic. (Also because players like Bradford, Carter, Richard Davis, and Andrew Cyrille have never had problem filling up space). Quote

colinmce Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 I will never stop beating myself up for passing on a $30 copy. Quote
mjazzg Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 I will never stop beating myself up for passing on a $30 copy. Ouch.....$110 + is the cheapest I've seen it in the last few years Quote
colinmce Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 I think we've been over this before, but I wonder if Jonathan Horowich could do anything with this one. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 I paid $20 in 2005 - hadn't seen it often and felt like it was a good price, even with some cover wear. Quote
B. Clugston Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 I bought mine for $30 two years ago. I do occasionally see copies at that price. Weber's piece is liner notes for a reissue, but I don't know if that's wishful thinking or if someone is planning a reissue. Quote
