  1. This relatively recent AA release (5LP/4CD) should certainly be up there
  2. [Y707]Add Lee Young Lee And Lester Young's Band : Red "Mack" Morris (tp) Bumps Myers (ts) Lester Young (ts,vcl) Jimmy Rowles (p) Louis Gonzales (g) Red Callender (b) Lee Young (d) prob."Club Capri", Hollywood, CA, prob c. February-July 1942 (Just a) Little bit south of North Carolina Prez Box (It)45/A, JUTB (It)CD-3019 [CD], Masters of Jazz (F)MJCD47 [CD], Sound Hills (Jap)SSCD-8035/50 [CD] Note: The above is a private recording. I have the recording (Prez Box, Vol. 1) - absolutely abysmal SQ but the tenor definitely sounds like Lester
  3. and aren't those shirts so timeless & groovy
  4. I second that as this would have to be in my top 5 from this category https://www.discogs.com/release/29224915-Various-LA-Jazz-Institute-Presents-The-Complete-Crazy-Sunday-At-The-Lighthouse-September-13-1953
  5. OMG I'm shocked - he was a vital force in keeping the Blue Note label (and many others) alive - whenever I see those twofer BN LPs from the 70s I think of him I have a number of letters from him sent throughout the 90s, pre email days RIP Michael
  6. also good coverage in Wickes "Innovations In British Jazz"
  7. a contemporary of Joe Harriott though a bit younger
  8. you're right there - everything I have him on (his sessions & as sideman) shines
  9. been listening to Harry Beckett's "Joy Unlimited" from 1974 on the Cadillac (John Jack) label A strong session with Ray Russell's guitar playing a real standout - the last track Not Just Tomorrow showcases Russel really "going for it" Highly recommended imho
  10. just received an email from Eremite & am looking forward to this too

However, according to research by Alun Morgan and Malcolm Walker with help from Don Maggin's biography, the recording date is much more likely to be Los Angeles, February 1954. James Accardi's online Wardell Gray discography gives "Concert, San Francisco Veterans' Memorial, San Francisco, CA, Monday, February 8, 1954". See prob. mid-late April, 1954 for the rest of The Jazz Factory (Sp)JFCD22880 [CD]. (1) This title also on American Jazz Classics (Sp)99070 [CD] titled "You Better Believe It! + Moment Of Truth". (*) These 2 titles also on Marshmallow (Jap)
  13. if you're a Tristano/Marsh listener I would highly recommend it - one of my fav Braxton sets
