  1. As you can see, sls declined to voice her thoughts. Volume II freshly obtained as an early x-mas gift. Thanks for the pointers, Chris.
  2. Yup, “Ping Pong” is my favorite from that disk, too. For me, nothing will ever say Blue Note as much as that band. I still haven’t figured out how Shorter, Morgan and Timmons played with such distinctive voices and yet made everything sound of a piece. Must have had a lot to do with Art. Come to think of it, I’m still amazed at how Art gave each number its own identity.
  3. Fortunately, it's a org thread.
  4. I’m pretty much with you Jim, but I know someone who swore off both org and aaj primarily because of Deep and the surrounding machinations. It’s easier for some to turn the channel than others and in the meantime, we’re losing some pretty damn fine people.
  5. Some not already mentioned: · Zane Massey Brass Knuckles · Willie Williams WW III
  6. My top pick is Jingle Bell Jazz on Columbia. It’s actually a two-fer combining the previously issued God Rest Ye Merry Jazzmen and Jingle Bell Jazz. One undocumented bonus; Dexter Gordon’s “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” contains about two minutes of playing edited from the version issued on God Rest Ye. · Dexter Gordon “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” · McCoy Tyner “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” · Arthur Blythe Quartet “The Christmas Song” · Heath Brothers “Our Little Town” · Paquito D’Rivera “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” · Wynton Marsalis Quintet “We Three Kings Of Orient Are” · Duke Ellington “Jingle Bells” · Lionel Hampton “White Christmas” · Carmen McRae “The Christmas Song” · Pony Poindexter “Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer” · Dave Brubeck Quartet “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town” · Lambert, Hendricks and Ross “Deck Us All With Boston Charlie” · Miles Davis “Blue Xmas” · Herbie Hancock “Deck Halls” Prestige Christmas Collection is also worth a quick mention.
  7. “‘We are very disappointed this happened,’ Burk said. ‘We want her to come back as a shopper.’” Sincerity like that should garner Burk three ghosts come December.
  8. Not EMI but… Can’t remember where, but I recently read BMG plans to incorporate copy protection into all its disks worldwide —without any outward warnings or signs of copy protection. I wonder if this also includes other labels’ material manufactured for BMG’s club? But I’m with B3-er; for my purposes digital>analog>digital will do just fine.
  9. Can’t help but cast my vote for Hadi. I just love his work, but I’m glad this poll is reedman specific. Otherwise I’d have to go with Jimmy Knepper (forgive me, Hadi). Call me crazy, but more an more, I tend to think of Hadi as a link between Parker and Ornette.
  10. Causes an uncontrollable urge to reach for the gain? · Count Basie’s first “Lady Be Good” (despite the surface noise) · Rollins’ “Blue Seven” · Ellington’s “Half the Fun” · Coltrane’s “Up ’Gainst the Wall” and “Chasin’ the Trane” · Art Blakey’s “Ping Pong” · Tom Waits “Goin’ Out West”
  11. Although it might have been a last-minute substitution, it’s not really a contradiction. Hill and Henderson practiced/played together frequently before Departure, and if I remember correctly, even before Black Fire).
  12. That’s one of the criticisms I’ve never understood about Miles Blackhawk recordings. Some don’t care for Hank’s playing, fair enough, but why wish for Coltrane when there’s a fair amount of Miles/Coltrane material available? It’s not as if Hank somehow displaced Trane for the few recordings he did with Davis.
  13. I setup a new gphotoshow file with couw’s gifs, and went to bed. Now that I’m awake again (drunken neighbor’s shouting works better than an alarm clock) I see gphoto can’t handle animated gifs. Damn.
  14. Outstanding, couw! Thanks to your larger versions, I now have a new screensaver.
  15. Blue Note’s On This Day webpage has a link to Kurt’s email in the customer review area. In as non-confrontational a way as I could, I asked about the sound quality. Kurt never responded —no big surprise, he’s probably sick to death from fending off similar questions— but as bad as the sound is, the high frequencies aren’t absent as much as they’re buried. Even though the bass drum is way out front, a little EQ-ing does wonders.
  16. Nicely done, y’all! If you make ’em bigger, BN will have to take the official screensaver out back for a lesson.
  17. I like Minor Move quite a bit; it has more of a ’50s feeling than the others do. If forced to choose, I’d say Waiting Game is the most dispensable (as if any Brooks could be called dispensable).
  18. While I enjoy both boards, It’s no secret that I post more often at AAJ. Probably because there’s someone over there with a sense of humor not so different from mine.
  19. On Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Bob Simpson and Bob Sompson are listed as engineer. Charlie Mariano and Charlie Manano both played alto. The Mariano/Manano example makes me wonder if AMG is using some form of OCR software, since “ri” is sometimes read as “n”
  20. Volume 1 of Dexter’s Nights At the Keysone features “Backstaris/LTD.”
  21. You’re not alone, I had to look it up: anorak noun · 1 a warm waterproof hip-length jacket usually with a hood, originally worn in polar regions, but now worn for any outdoor activity · 2 (informal) a socially inept person with a hobby considered by most people to be boring [ETYMOLOGY: from Eskimo ánorâq] But I still don’t know which of the two apply.
  22. Damn, Google’s no help at all. Glockenspiel?
  23. It’s a shame they missed music boy’s escapades, or maybe they didn’t (dross?). Gee, from what Jazz Review wrote, you’d think “Album of the Week” was followed by “Thump on Member X Week.” …Which is kind of an intriguing idea; all the venom of a Dean Martin Roast, but with actual humor?
  24. Oh man, how can you have up without down? It’s a yin and yang, black and white, in and out kinda thing. Disregard either of the two and you’ll never reach shaving nirvana. If I can’t run out of the bathroom shouting, “Score!” something just ain’t right.
  25. I once had an electric razor. After about a year, the batteries gave out despite my keeping it charged. I’ve been doing the safety blade thing ever since –with an old shaving mug, brush and soap. Who needs aerosol cans? I think the electric I had was a Braun.
