  1. Touche music isn't exactly Verve though is it. He been living in Europe for the last 7 or 8 years from what I've heard but someone told me he did a gig with Cedar Walton on the West Coast last year.
  2. I don't know about that. Did the Lakers play that well or did San Antonio play that badly? Besides Fishers shot is what got them here and San Antonio missed LOTS of open shots. I had the Lakers to win it all back when we were discussing all the off season moves but now I'm not so sure. Payton is not so good and Malone is still hurt. They are ripe to be taken but I really don't think Minnesota or Sacremento has it in them. No one is really winning these games (in all the series) as much as not losing them so I don't know what to think anymore so I'll go with experience and Kobe. As for the Pistons and Nets, I don't have a clue anymore.
  3. Eric is a solid player but he definitely owes George Coleman some money
  4. I believe the quote is "Improvisation is composition speeded up and composition is improvisation slowed down" Joe, I don't think Blue Note artists had any say in what was released or not released in the day but I've heard Wayne doesn't want his unissued Blue Note session to see the light of day so they must have some control now. You know with there being no soloists on the the level of Coltrane or Rollins out there now, maybe it would be best if more musicians of this generation took Wayne's approach and focused on the overall feel and vibe of their music instead of just their weight as a soloist. It seems the best stuff I've heard lately takes this approach.
  5. "Wait for the stagecoach to come and ambush it". I love it. Some nice stuff in here but the same old tired Weather Report analogies and the complete dismissing of his electric stuff, some of which I find brilliant. I really get sick of this mindset.
  6. Caught the group last night for part of the second set at a jam packed Blue Note. It was a nice set, the group played well and the final tune was Song For My Father in which Horace stretched out quite a bit. Horace sounded good, about as I heard him 6 or 7 years ago. The band was good, they were all well versed in the hard bop language, three members of One For All were on the stage, and seemed to really enjoy sharing the stage with one of the masters they all got alot of their language from. No one knocked me out but they all were solid.
  7. Candid Dolphy has alternates of Quiet Please and Hazy Hues, Moods in Free Time is the same as on Out Front. There is a Japanese CD edition of Out Front with an alternate of Strength and Sanity but no other alternates. The latest Japanese CD edition of Out Front has no alternates.
  8. Actually there are couple of good ones this week as well. I caught one billed as called The Cookers, a Night of the Cookers reunion of sorts with Pete LaRoca and James Spaulding, both in fine form. They were joined by Craig Handy, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss and George Cables. Craig Handy was exceptional as well but Spaulding stole the show to me. He is in excellent form, an unsung hero to me. Very nice show. I might make the trek back down for the Curtis Fuller show this weekend with Louis Hayes, Wallace Roney and Javon Jackson. I'm there for the McLean thing for sure.
  9. Woman: Hold me closer...closer Groucho: If I held you any closer, I'd be behind you Groucho (to two woman): Let's get married Dumont: But that's bigamy Groucho: Well it's big of me too
  10. I don't know the schedule but for the venues, I'd recommend Vienne the most, beautiful outdoor ampitheatre and ancient indoor concert hall and it usually has a good program. Pori is a good festival but scenery wise it's not very impressive. Umbria and anything else in Italy (there are a lot of smaller festivals) is highly recommended. The big act to look out for this summer is the Wayne Shorter/ Herbie Hancock/Dave Holland/Brian Blade Quartet.
  11. For this weekend I'd go with Tolliver, killing stuff. I think the Baroness passed away a few years back and before Douglas really hit the scene. That's a pretty heavy schedule jazzshrink, at least there is no snow to slow you down. I might try to catch Tolliver again but probably on Sunday, enjoy the shows and give us a report if you can
  12. Yup, mine is from Nice. Now about that George Russell thing, sounds very interesting, I'm curious to hear the music and I can add it to my hostile French audience collection along with the Miles bootleg with them booing Coltrane
  13. I have a bootleg CD called Toys
  14. He has a place in the history for sure Great jazz album: Tones For Jones Bones Great trio record: Now He Sings Now He Sobs Great fusion record: Romantic Warrior Great something record: Three Quartets Great sideman: Miles Davis, Stan Getz Great live recording: with Joe Henderson at Montreaux, incredible stuff Immediately recognizable classic tune: Spain (for better or worse) That's enough I think
  15. Actually if it is the same as it was at Iridium a few weeks back, it's Joe Magnerelli and Myron Walden on the front line.
  16. With all due respect to Pelt, to me he's not the trumpet player Payton is. Not yet anyway. That said, I don't think Payton has made a record I enjoy as much as Pelt's Profile. My favorite recordings of Payton are a Greg Tardy record The Hidden Light and the Adonis Rose Criss Cross dates
  17. Injuries as jsngry said can change everything but both probably get into the playoffs where hot pitching can change everything so the Soxs actually have a chance but probably not
  18. Saw Tolliver as well, great, great stuff. Will probably try to see it again
  19. I think Atlantis should be on the list, A very important record in my opinion. I voted for speak No Evil one of the best records ever to me and I could have easily said The All Seeing Eye as well
  20. You need to add Slide Hampton, Charles tolliver, Jimmy Heath and Kenny Wheeler if you want a complete picture IMHO
  21. Well I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion and it seems typical that I would disagree with a jazz critic but what's the problem with this CD? Too much harmony for you out guys? AMG missed the boat on this one as well. Just further proof to me that you can't trust the critics anymore, they all jump on the same bandwagons. I'll say it again, it's a beautiful disc one of the best I heard last year.
  22. I liked the Long View a lot I put it on my top ten list for the year. A rather ambitious project but fully realized with lots of great writing. Easily availible here though Justin Time which seems to distribute Enja in the US now
  23. These worked best for me The New Jazz Composers Octet Walkin' The Line Myron Walden Higher Ground Jeremy Pelt Profile Marcus Strickland Brotherhood David Weiss Breathing Room I thought these were OK as well Taylor Haskins Wake Up Call Vardan Ovsepian Sketch Book Matt Penman The Unquiet Miguel Zenon Looking Forward Robert Glasper Mood
  24. I don't like RVG's in general at all but I kept this one because the sound is OK and, JSngry, there is more stage patter from Sonny. The sound in general never bothered me and it is some of the best Sonny ever on record so I personally don't see where some of that other stuff is coming from.
  25. I can confirm that it is indeed Rakin' and Scrapin' as well. I have have the Mabern record (nice record by the way). As for recording location, how about that it says original session produced by Howard Rumsey on the Fresh Sound Lighthouse discs and that there are other Live at the Lighthouse releases on Fresh Sound that also credit Rumsey as "original session producer" and on one, I think Rumsey himself wrote the liner notes.
