  1. Criterion announced that Louis Malle's 'Elevator to the Gallows (Ascenseur pour l'echafaud)' is coming to DVD in April. Among the features: -Footage of Miles Davis improvising the film's score -New and archival interviews with Louis Malle, actors Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet, and original soundtrack session pianist René Urtreger -New video discussion about the score with jazz critic Gary Giddins and musician Jon Faddis I'm looking forward to finally seeing this one!
  2. Night Stalker is on DVD, and I also loved the theme, written by Gil Melle!
  3. Geez, too late! It's been cancelled.
  4. I got a notice that the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Consummation cd will shortly be unavailable from yourmusic.com. Stick it in your cart now before it's gone!
  5. A guy walks into a bar with an octopus. He sits the octopus down on a stool and tells everyone in the bar that this is a very talented octopus. He can play any instrument in the world. He hears everyone in the crowd laughing at him ... so he says he will wager $50 to anyone who has an instrument that the octopus can't play. A guy walks up with a guitar and sits it beside the octopus. The octopus starts playing better than Jimmi Hendrix. So the man pays his $50. Another guy walks up with a trumpet, The octopus plays the trumpet better than Dizzy Gillespie. So the man pays his $50. A third guy walks up with bagpipes. He sits them down and the octopus fumbles with it for a minute and sets it down with a confused look. "Ha!", the man says, "can't you play it?" The octopus looks up at the man and says "Play it? I'm going to fuck it as soon as I get its pajamas off."
  6. I would recommend the 3-disc anthology Across the Great Divide, available through Yourmusic.com for $17.97. A very nice overview, I think.
  7. How is it? I'm a big Gaitskill fan and have been waiting years for a new book... but haven't had the $$ to pony up for it yet. Will probably end up on my b-day list. ← I'm about halfway through, and while it's a pretty depressing story, the writing is great, and frequently funny. I will stop and reread a sentence just because it's such a great sentence. I got it from the library.. no $$ to pony up! Next up... The Truth (with Jokes) by Al Franken
  8. Tord Gustavsen Trio - The Ground My first choice of Monk's Dream was on backorder.
  9. During the week, I use a Chemex brewer. Keep it on a burner until you're done brewing to keep it hot enough, then pour it into a thermos. I use an electric kettle to (nearly) boil the water and keep it hot throughout brewing. On the weekends, I use the Bodum Santos vacuum brewer. It's a little more work to clean up, but it's fun and the coffee's great. Then in the afternoons, it's espresso with my little Krups Gusto, which really can make quite excellent espressos. Also on the weekends, I roast enough coffee to get me through the week. Fresh roasted coffee gives you the best crema on those espressos!
  10. Heart poundin'... Veins cloggin'... MITCHELL!
  11. Up. Just got this yesterday for a birthday present, and it's really quite fabulous. High-quality paper and binding, full-size strips and four-color cartoons, all the watercolors, etc., from the previous books. It's a behemoth of a box (over 20 pounds) about the size of 4 mosaics -- I'm not sure what bookshelf is going to hold it, since it sticks out so much. I had a blast reading to my 7 year old daughter last night, who had several genuine laughs. I'll be reading this one for a long time!
  12. This thing is 109.98 at Amazon. Which price is correct?
  13. This disc is now available at Yourmusic.com for 5.99. It's in my queue!
  14. Geez, Lon! Makes me want to send back my Selects, and encourage others to do the same!
  15. I think this makes a lot of sense, customer service-wise and business-wise. It's the shipping, man, the shipping! By limiting orders to 1, they get $8 shipping. To ship 6 sets, or 100 sets, they get $16. They are not worried at all about having any leftover stock if they refuse to sell multiple sets to a single buyer. They make more money, and more customers are happy. Time to place my order!
  16. Tempest! The Atari Jaguar home system had a version called Tempest 2000 that was excellent. Hmmm... might have to dust that off tonight! I spent so much time and lunch money in the arcades. I was so addicted to Defender that I would catch myself playing it in my head during the day, moving my hands around like they were on the controls. These days, I would have been put on Ritalin.
  17. I STILL play Robotron almost every day. (on my PC). Robotron and Defender, both created by Eugene Jarvis, are far and away the greatest action games of all time. There's so much happening on the screen at any one time, your mind has to go into an altered state to keep up. I never get tired of those games. Pac-Man bores me after 2 minutes.
  18. Just got mine in the mail today. Thanks, EJP and Rooster!
  19. Gavin MacLeod Ted Lange Bernie Kopell
  20. Now all I need is The Complete Bloom County, The Complete Krazy Kat, and The Complete Nancy, and I'll be set!
