  1. I hope you have a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
  2. Big Al, you're one of the best guys around. Any beer that shares your name has got to be good! :tup
  3. I voted for Kraftwerk, Albert King, Butterfield and Rush. I agree it's a shame that Captain Beefheart and Can aren't nominated.
  4. My late grandpa, in the last part of his career, worked on the first two space shuttles. I remember, when staying with my grandparents as a boy, seeing the Enterprise being driven through the town he lived in. It was so cool! It's very bittersweet for me to see the shuttle program end. It's the end of an era. It's hard to believe that 43 years after Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, we have no manned space program.
  5. I enjoyed this album a lot. I preferred it to his other Blue Note release, Full Circle. I had hoped there would be more Blue Note albums from him. I haven't kept up with his later cds. I really enjoyed many of the new Blue Note releases in 1998-1999. I saw it as a peak for the newer version of the label.
  6. This app is really cool. I just downloaded Spotify and am enjoying it.
  7. Sorry to hear you have to work today, but I still hope you have a Happy Birthday!!
  8. Happy Birthday, Lon!! I hope you have a great one.
  9. I've been on a Sonny Stitt kick during the last two weeks. Fortunately, I have a lot to listen to.
  10. I used to have a made in the USA Jazzmaster reissue. I've gotten rid of all my guitars, except for one cheapo, but that Jazzmaster is the only one I really miss (okay, I miss my Gretsch too). I had some great guitars too, so this isn't faint praise. I dream of having one again someday and putting a Mastery bridge on it. I've read positive comments about the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster on various forums. You might find some good info about them on the Gear Page forum and the Telecaster forum.
  11. Happy Birthday, WD45!! I hope it's a great one and I hope you come back from the stores with a stack of music.
  12. I bought these for 49 cents apiece. They are all in like new condition and were cheaper than a burger! Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages McCoy Tyner - New York Reunion Dave Holland Big Band - What Goes Around Duke Ellington - Four Symphonic Works by Duke Ellington Pee Wee Russell - Individualism of Pee Wee Russell
  13. I really like this set. It's hard to believe it was the last new Mosaic set I purchased, and I bought it when it was released.
  14. It is so difficult to see our culture going backwards. I wonder how long it will be before they start burning witches again?
  15. This is a crazy story! There was one person I'd held a grudge against in my life. It was a friend from junior high who turned against me and brought me a lot of misery. I ran into him on Facebook a couple years ago and we ended up talking on the phone for an hour. It was so cathartic to forgive him let go of my anger. My grudge towards him was like a cancer that only hurt me. He didn't even remember all the stuff that went down between us. lol
  16. For me, Hot Rats, Uncle Meat, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasels, Absolutely Free (for nostalgia's sake; I was 12 when I first bought it), and Fillmore East (absolutely brilliant satire). If you want to narrow it down to one or two, Hot Rats and Uncle Meat. Thanks. What about the other live one -- band from LA or somesuch? Just Another Band From L.A....Billy The Mountain (Side One) is EPIC. I'm sure Side Two was good, but frankly, I can no longer remember it. I LOVE Billy the Mountain!! Side two is good too. Other than Just Another Band From L.A., my favorites are Absolutely Free, Freak Out and Hot Rats. No shit. That's fucked up. Wow! That's awful. Seriously awful. Actually, my parents went to high school in the same town as Zappa. Even though it was in California, there's was some serious racism. It wasn't overt, but it was in the attitudes. I have been sickened by some of the things my aunt has said about Obama, and this was before he was even president. I don't even think that she knows she is a racist. I'm not making any excuses for them, but only illustrating how it really is out there. It's one of the reasons I keep to myself...
  17. I'm glad this thread was brought back from the dead. I was talking about this subject this morning. I appreciate the internet but I have lost my enthusiasm for interaction with others on it. I am grateful for some of the great friends I've met on the web, yet I am disappointed by most. I feel extremely alienated from people these days. It seems as if the lack of tact that is a normal on the internet has crept out into the real world. I'm disgusted at the things I often hear others say. It feels a bit like bizarro world to me. I've lost faith in people. I'm not enjoying the 21st century very much. lol
  18. Thank you so much!!! I purchased some Indian music this time.
  19. Wow! The big 5-0. I hope you have a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
  20. When I was 18, one of my favorite bands was the Byrds. I read that their song "Eight Miles High" was strongly influenced by John Coltrane, especially his "Africa Brass" album. I purchased the "Africa Brass" cd and fell in love. The next day, I purchased Coltrane's "Impressions", Charles Mingus' "Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus" and "Bitches Brew" by Miles Davis. From then on, for the next 18 years, jazz became a huge part of my life.
