  1. I want to save up and buy the AEC Box from Chuck Nessa. Might take me a while though, but that will force me to listen to all the unopened cds I have laying around. Darn "Funny Rat" has turned my buying habits upside down.
  2. My first listen to Cecil Taylor's In The Brewing Luminous. It was such an overwhelming experience, I didn't know what to think.

  5. I think this board is rife with Mafia informants that had to go into "Witness Protection" to save their lives.... not that there's anything wrong with that!
  6. Went to pick up some Anthony Braxton and *sigh* wound up with more. Anthony Braxton: --- The Complete Braxton 1971 (minty lp) --- Braxton / Taylor Ho Bynum: Duets (Wesleyn) 2002 --- Braxton / Georg Grawe: Duo (Amsterdam) 1991 Misha Mengelberg: Two Days in Chicago Pernice Brothers: Australia Tour EP 2002 Duran Duran: Duran Duran & Rio. I hang my head in shame.
  7. I was very happy with Roscoe Mitchell / Brus Trio: After Fallen Leaves. To my mind AMG missed the boat on a wonderful cd in their review, I've listened to this cd five time in ten days and love it. Mitchell is in fine form, and the Brus Trio has a good understanding of what Mitchell wants in his music. It's a very underrated cd and worth taking a chance on if you like Mitchell.
  8. Thanks for the update P.L.M. Looks like that flight got canceled after all. If Braxton could just lower the junk food intake though.
  9. I'm stunned!!!! Misha looks like someone who retired to a Florida traylorpark!
  10. I hate to be a nattering nabob of negitivity, but I did not like Multiplication Table. I thought that Shipp was trying to make a Grand Statement, and failed. To my ears, the music was unfocused and too clever. I usually like remakes of standards, but I really did not like "C Jam Blues" or "Take the A Train", Shipp was trying too hard to be different. However I love what he does in the "String Trio" recordings, especially By the Law of Music, which I cannot get enough of. There's no denying Shipp's talent, I do, at times, question his musical choices.
  11. I'm thinking about taking the plunge on the box set -- any further reflections on the music?

Oh.......Heck.......YEAH!!!! But the coolest moment of all is on Lyons' second solo, toward the end, Lyons' blowing like a mother, and Taylor starts to pound those low notes on the piano. Just waaaaaaaaaay coooooooooooooooool!!!! B) B) B)

  14. Whew! Finally finished Anthony Powell's A Dance To The Music Of Time. This was the second time for me and I was surprised, on this read, how much death figured in the novel. Seems as if everyone dies, that death is the center which everything revolves around, and you're just left with Jenkins, the narrator of the story, and Widermerpool, the main character, who dies at the end. Supposedly, the four volumes take after the four season, which I can believe. Still have may doubts about the quality of the novel, Nick Jenkins is not enough of a presence to make us interested in him; a very passive character. Seems as if Pamala Widermerpool is the moral center of the story -- yikes! Well worth the investment of time and money to get this though. I have no doubt that I'll read it again, and, most likely, have a different reaction.
  15. Today is a day for all tamale lovers. Can't wait for my first chorizo tamale!

Think I'll be picking that one up this weekend. I find Mitchell a very interesting musician.

Listening to this one again as I type, and it is really, really, good (how's that for a review ). Mitchel is just a very creative musician. The cd won't knock you flat, but it will stay with you thoughout the day.
  19. You are in for a wonderfull experience when you read that. Baldwin is still an overlooked novelist of true genius. The Library of America editions of his writing are worth purchasing.

O.K., I've put aside my current fixation on Echo and the Bunnymen and listened to Clusone 3: Rara Avis. Very good music on this cd, with Ernst Reijseger being especially creative on the cello. In fact, it is Reijseger that Hans Bennink and Michael Moore are playing off of. He can make the cello do anything and has a beautiful touch and sound. There is a very interesting treatment of Jobim's O Pato, a free-jazz samba. It keeps the samba feel, but the beat floats freely (just confirms what a genius Jobim was). Many quotes from other songs in the music, sort of a "Mocking Bird" ethos to the solos at times. I must admit though, Bennik can get on my nerves with his "humor" at times -- he's just his typical self, throwing in everything, including the kitchen sink. Cd also has a very gracefull feel to it, with one song easily flowing into the next, almost like a suite to describe bird life as felt by the trio. Worth getting if you find a copy somewhere. I still have An Hour With... to go, so, sorry Ian, you'll have to wait awhile until I can get back to you.

These cd reviews, plus the ones I was COMMANDED by Д.Д. to post on: Clusone Trio: Rara Avis & An Hour With.... The pressure is now on for us to deliver the goods.!
  22. Sorry about the passing of your mother. Keeping her and the family in my prayers.
  23. Hemophiliac --- John Zorn/Mike Patton/Ikue Mori Just a bunch of noise. Just because something is a limited edition doesn't mean it's good. Got rid of it after three listens.
  24. I know I'm late ..... but so what! It's a Mug's Game -- Soft Cell Bring on the Dancing Horses -- Echo and the Bunnymen Wake Me up Before You Go-Go -- Wham!
