The Jazz Couriers in Concert Featuring Ronnie Scott and Tubby Hayes

MI0003164720.jpg

Nice one.  I was there, my first jazz concert.  The Couriers were supporting Dave Brubeck.

damn - that's pretty incredible.

A great concert and sure a wonderful way to familiarise yourself with jazz!

I gave it another spin tonight, my 50+ years old copy has a beautiful sound!

Not a "great" album, but it's enlightening to hear Nichols in this context.

Joe Newman ------The Happy Cats---------( Vogue/ Coral)

Decent modern arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ernie Wilkins . Mainly Basieites with Johnny Acea and Connie Kay the exceptions. The Basie feel is limited with the proceedings sound more modern in the whole. Lovely date. Recommended.

Nice record, but I always wondered why they would have called their band "Avant Garde".

Probably a marketing decision from Polydor.

There's more material from those (or similar) sessions in the vaults, some of which has apparently seen digital release. I think at least some of that is more "out."
