I've almost purchased both the Shepp and Ayler "Impulse Story" discs (as I have very little of both artists) at regular prices. Now that I can get them for $5.99, it might make the decision easier. or not... I usually regret buying compilation CDs, as I usually end up wanting all of the individual recordings. Up to now, you needed the Mosaic box just for this. Everyone is at the top of their respective games on this one. The Blakey is another story. Lots of drumming. I probably have a hundred Blakey albums, and this is one I rarely (if ever) put on. And then I later found two other copies that I passed along at cost to a board member. They're definitely worth the 6 dollar investment, mainly for the few NON drum corps pieces. Not for your average jazz buyer. It was originally on 2 separate albums. Vol. 1 & vol. 2. Later on 2 separate CDs. (Japan only) Donald Byrd does play trumpet on a few songs and Ray Bryant is also on piano. (not all drum solos) Now you can buy all the music combined (8 tracks, about 68 minutes) on a single CD for $5.99 Clearance priced.
