  1. Past hour
  2. - Coltrane (sort of) label-mate situation. ??? - Philly connection. ??? - Tenor sax not primary instrument. ??? Crazy nightmare.
  3. I'm somewhat surprised that Esteban has such a limited social media presence. I get that some of the sites, like Facebook, have lost a lot of followers due to the proliferation of AI BS all over it, but you need to have some way to let people know when & where you're playing or else no one can buy tickets. He even allowed his web domain to expire.
  4. Today
  5. I haven't seen Esteban Castro perform, but I'll watch for his name in the future. Young piano masters seems to be a thing throughout history. They crop up time & again going back to Mozart. BTW - one of his recent Smalls' performances is up on You Tube & their website. Free to watch: I believe the second set is up here too. https://www.smallslive.com/events/31534-esteban-castro-trio/
  6. Art Pepper “Promise Kept: The Complete Artists House Recordings” Omnivore 5 cd box set. 500×500 49.1 KB Art Pepper with George Cables, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins on the album “Stardust” 595×604 49.4 KB Great band!
  7. He approaches these pieces much more relaxed than you would expect from this man.
  8. Thanks. Makes sense he would be producer then. The discogs pages for this album weren't listing that credit for him that I saw.
  9. Comforting to see others share the same fate. Last week I searched high and low for a double CD with early 50s New Orleans revival jazz that I KNEW I had. Nowhere to be found. Annyoing because after I had obtained several dozen CDs with 40s and 50s N.O./revival/Condonites jazz from that estate here I decided it was high time I set up a corner specifically for post-1945 revival jazz in my CD filing boxes. Well, that N.O. double CD eventually did turn up - inside a box with original Trad Jazz EPs elsewhere on my shelves where I had filed it for lack of space in the CD corner. Along with a CD of "Sidney Bechet at Storyville", which it turned out was also included (as a different reissue with differently styled inlay) among the half dozen Bechet CDs from that estate. But oh well ... these recent CD arrivals had come my way essentially free after all.
  10. 👍- the original LP from 1960 on my shelf ...
  11. I am in a process of inspecting and evaluating stuff stored in dozens of boxes on my shelves, and while dusting the CDs with British music it turned out the missing Pentangle CD was correctly filed with the band's other discs. Blind man ....
  12. Yep! Tune and arrangement by Charlie Mariano. Quincy is credited with conducting. Not Bill Barron. More obscure (I think). I'll add that this tenor player is not primarily know for their tenor playing.
  13. Maybe. I haven't been inspired to. Now Bill Evans “Haunted Heart” Craft Recordings 3 cd set, disc 1
  14. I've listened to her. . . she hasn't really captured my fancy yet.
  15. Nice singer, for sure. I am also pretty sure you know of and have listened to Roberta Gambarini, who to these ears is one of the most interesting jazz vocalists nowadays.
  16. Tiziana Ghiglioni “A Lucio Battisti” Philology cd I picked this up for 99 cents and it’s quite interesting. I had never heard this Italian singer before, but she sounds very nice here with great accompaniment. 355×363 11.1 KB 338×300 20.6 KB
  17. Starting off with an album I really like: Rudy Royston “303”. . . this work from the drummer being thoroughly modern and a nice recording. From 2014. 800×800 56 KB 634×634 94.5 KB Bass – Mimi Jones or Yasushi Nakamura Drums, Percussion – Rudy Royston Guitar – Nir Felder Piano – Sam Harris Saxophones– Jon Irabagon Trumpet – Nadja Noordhuis
  18. No, Charlie Mariano is the composer and arranger on the selected track. From the liner notes: "Quincy Jones, who produced this album, selected the personnel, picked the instrumentation and arrangers."
  19. They mentioned it in last week's newsletter: "We are deeply disappointed to announce that both Adrian Sherwood and Chucho Valdés have had to cancel their planned performances at Big Ears, due to circumstances beyond their control."
